Clear beer.

Post by Jimmy M » Wed Nov 28, 2012 5:06 pm

I've been pretty lucky so far to have some very clear brews after bottling but have had
Buddy's just starting out having very cloudy beer, is there any tips or tricks to having clear beer?

I'm suck on using a secondary just because it seems like it helps.

Thanks

Jimmmmy.

I've always used a little gelatin to expidite clearing, helps if you're in a rush. Just add it to your secondary after racking and let it sit for a few days. Also, do not disturb it after it's settled or it won't re clear. That's one method, there are many but time is ultimately the best.

Whirlfloc/irish moss in the boil, a good cold break when chilling, and enough time sitting undisturbed is what works for me. When I had the room in my fridge, I also cold crashed for about 48 hours before bottling/kegging.

What kind of yeast is he using? AG/ext/kit?
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

I know it was an extract kit... Some cheap IPA, tasted good just cloudy..

Should crash cooling be done with all beer even extrat kits? And festa brews?
I thought the festa brew kits have been cooled to drop the waste..

Cold and time usually clears all beers.

Most of my brews are clear with a few exceptionally so. Sometimes improper mashing will cause a beer not to clear by leaving too much unconverted starch
in the brew, but that's rare and even more rare with kits like Festa.

I've had great luck with gelatin + crash cooling. With the exception of the pumpkin beer we did this year... though I suspect what happened there was what Tony suggested - too much unconverted starch.

One other reason, could be over priming of the bottles. That is about the only other thing I can think of that would happen to a kit to create cloudy beer.
On Tap "in bottles": winter beer (spiced beer, nutmeg, cinnamon, star anise, ginger, cloves)
In Secondary:
In Primary: winter beer (spiced beer, nutmeg, cinnamon, star anise, ginger, cloves)

if you use gelatin with a natural carb bottle process won't it become cloudy again from the yeast reaction?

By the time your beer is carbonated, the yeast will have settled out, leaving your beer as clear as it was going into the bottles.
