Does anyone know where I can get some food grade silicon tubing?

Let me know if you find some, lol. I think dairies use silicone tubing, but I don't know where they get it from.

I am also very interested in this item

there's a couple suppliers in Dartmouth that would likely carry this... (I'll make some calls when I get to work)

What diameter (ID/OD), and approx. how much are you all looking for?
I'm assuming you just need it to handle a boil (say... 140 deg C)

The stuff I got from Morebeer was capable of being autoclaved, I think it's good for almost 500f. It's 1/2" or 5/8" ID.

1/2" ID, 3/4" OD & yes, 140C should be sufficient. If smaller diameter & higher temp tubing is available, I have plans for a steam injection system for step mashing.

D'oh! Now that I think of it, I should also ask my wife. She's a nurse and might be able to grab some (unused) stuff from work. She's grabbed me some gigantic syringes for me, which makes decanting the 'beer' off my yeast starters a breeze.

That's the stuff I was looking at too.

Home Depot (Bayers Lake) has high temp silicone tubing. I bought some a few weeks ago. I think it was around $20 for 10 feet. I'm not sure on the size, but it did fit on my 1/2" ball valve... so perhaps it's 1/2"?

Call the hose gods aka Stellar Industrial in Moncton (or Burnside). They have anything and everything. I don't think there'll be any silicone hose rated for steam because of the pressure and silicone tends to get soft when hot but they likely have silicone tubing, and wrapped steam tubing etc.

If Andy is just using the pressure cooker steam pressure, and, there is a shutoff valve on the cooker (before the tubing), it should handle the load when heating the mash. It worked for me anyway...

That's what I was planning. I really don't want to be playing with high pressure steam.

1/2 in diam should be good for the first project. I want to make some modifications to my kettle pickup tube, but want to test my idea with tubing and hose clamps before I make any permanent changes.

I agree, just sayin' - call looking for a steam rated silicone tubing it likely doesn't exist

Silicone (good to ~200°C), Norprene (Good to ~135°C) , and Viton (Good to ~200°C) are all good choices if you can get them food-grade certified.

Things got really busy here... so I didn't have a chance to call.... but you can likely get it at either Alpha-Gomma, or Stellar Industrial (although I have my doubts they'd carry food-grade certified).

I believe the dairy industry may use Norprene, which is what I'd recommend for low-pressure applications.
Has anyone given Farmers Dairy (they're in Bedford) a call to see what they use?


Worst-case scenario, you can likely get it from Cole Parmer, VWR, or McMaster... although I'm pretty sure you'd have to buy a full roll from the first two.

I'd take at least 10 feet if the price isn't outrageous. I'll probably stop into HD on my way out of town tonight to see what they have there.

I'm in need of two ~6' pieces of 1/2" high temp tubing. Where did you guys find the best price?

The farmhouse supply is the best price I have seen yet. But I really haven;'t had time to look. I'd love to find a local supplier though.

Seems like this question never got resolved... any place nearby that sells high temp tubing that is food grade?

It seems like there are many theories but no confirmation yet!

It's not a question of whether or not you can get it locally, as you most certainly can. It's a matter of needing a line of credit to buy it....

I'm looking for 5-6' and I've been leaving it too long. I'll have to order from farmhouse and hope the hot wort aeration doesn't cause too many problems with my next brew. That said, I didn't notice many off flavours with my first two AG brews. Maybe all the other problems masked it?

Here's what I found out after a bit of phone calling:

Stellar Industrial

• Braided PVC, good up to 65C. Starts at 3/16" I.D.
• White Nitrile tube (non toxic FDA rubber) that is good to 93C. "For handling most liquid food products including fats and oils without imparting taste or odour. Suitable for full vacuum." Starts at 1.5" I.D.

AlfaGomma

• Sells 3/4 I.D. Silicone tubing in 50 ft lengths @ $7.23 a foot

Everywhere else
Sells PVC braided tubing.

If you put a Farmhouse order in, make sure to post up a Group Buy thread as I'm sure others might want a few things too. They have pretty good prices on 4oz packs of hops, allowing us to get some different varieties that are sold out at NCM.

Agreed. I'd spring for 12' of tubing on a group buy.
