Substitute for Crystal 10L

Post by HoweFox » Fri Apr 05, 2013 3:21 pm

I am thinking about brewing the popular Centennial Blonde over on HBT: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f66/centenn ... all-42841/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The recipe calls for 1lb of Caramel / Crystal 10L, but NG only sells 30L. Any suggestions on what to substitute with (maybe 0.5lb of Crystal 30L) or where to get Crystal 10L?

I would just use the 30l it'll still be blonde
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Carapils would be pretty much the same; I don't think 10 L is supposed to add much in terms of color or flavor.

Also, something tells me that NG's Carapils may actually be 10 L.... am I crazy in thinking that?

This website can sometimes be useful for figuring out substitutions:

I use Carahell for C-10 sub
Nova Prime Taproom
Tap 1: Festa Brew Scotch Ale
Tap 2:
"Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain -
Quaintest thoughts - queerist fancies
Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

Nope our cara pils is actual cara pils... But it is 10l as far as I can gather they do achieve sorta the same thing but crystal would have slightly more flavour/fermentibility. Please correct me if I'm wrong this is kinda what I've put togeather through my reading and listening to brewers talk in the shop..
In bottle:Up the Kriek without a mash paddle, (insert Witty name)pumpkin lambic

On Tap:

Fermenting/Conditioning:

Future Projects:Chimney Sweepers Wife dark peated Scottish Heavy, Ginger bread brown, Home for the holidays spiced rum Brown Ale, Black Eye RyePA, Black Ryno Swartzbeir

Beer Laid To Rest (brewed it, drank it, loved it)Malt-n-lava AIPA, Single hop Citra pale ale, Belgian Blond, deforestation Ale Spruce Rye IPA,

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I think I will substitute the 1lb of Crystal 10L with an extra 0.5lb of cara pils (there is 1.25lb already in the recipe) and 0.5lb of Crystal 30L. Shouldn't really matter too much since the amounts are small anyway.
