How do you measure your water volumes?

Post by adams81 » Mon Apr 08, 2013 12:46 pm

Marks on your BK, a calibrated spoon/rod, a giant measuring cup... How are people measuring out their water volumes around here?

Calibrated dipstick - word of warning - Calibrate it BEFORE having a few beer ...

When I was brewing with a pot I just used a ruler to measure the headspace. Since moving to a keggle though, I've had to calibrate a spoon.

Calibrated 1/2" copper pipe with 90 degree elbow on the top with a groove cut to sit on the lip of my kettle. Painstakingly calibrated in 2 litre incriments from 20L to 54L, marked the lines first with marker then with a pipe cutter. Most of them washed off at one point and I had to do it a second time! :D

Good advice, but too late! ;) Mine is carefully calibrated in liters to 40l. Then the next 5l increment is 50...

I calibrated cold since I fill cold and go into the fermenter cooled. Once you get to know the absorption, boil off, and equipment loss for your system it doesn't matter much; when you have your process down pat.

Same here - calibrated cold and allow for the 4% when measuring the boil volume after I remove the grains, which in my case is about 1L adjustment.

On an 11 gallon batch, that's nearly a half gallon…
