Any idea where I could get set-up for growing some hops for the Spring? I have a pretty simple design for a trellis ready to go. I am going with a pretty short pole at only about 8 feet, so I am hoping to get something that is pretty high yielding in our climate to hopefully make up for it. I use cascade a lot and they seem to be good in NS. Nugget also appeals to me since they are said to be highly disease resistant. (I have not brewed with Nugget before!) I was going to order from FedCo with my seed order, but they won't ship a root over the border. Nugget might be the best choice (provided they grow here!) since they are pretty high in AA, less is more I suppose. I brew a lot of medium/dark ales. This would probably be good for bittering. I want to grow two different varieties if possible.

I got mine from Left Fields/Crannog Ales in BC. They might be done taking orders for this year tho'

There was someone in New Glasgow selling Cascade & Fuggles on kijiji last year - maybe x knows more about them.

I just sent a note to the guy that runs Meander River Farms (in the valley) to see if he's selling any. It's worth a try!

They are growing Cascade, Brewer's Gold, and Centennial now. They have a test hopyard with: Zeus, Gelenas, Newport, Perle, and Nugget.

He'll probably say yes, but they're $100/each - since each rhizome is more valuable than the hravested/dried hop cone and will probuce pounds of hop flowers year after year.

Meander's response is below. I've gone back to him asking him what varieties are available from the supplier. Once I get a response, I'll post here, and will set up a spreadsheet if anyone wants in.

We are in full expansion mode - so any rhizomes of our own that we do have are going back in to the ground for our own expansion.

However - I have also an order of rhizomes coming in from Oregon at the end of April/early May that I could likely add the requirements of your contacts to.

You can either have them contact me directly or they can order them through you - I'll need all orders (variety and volume) in by next Tuesday.

Cost is $4.50 per rhizome - and subject to availability from the supplier.

That's a reasonable response, considering the hassle of ordering cross border.

Is he the guy that's hoping to hoping to start drying his own hops and selling to homebrewers? I know I read about a local hop farmer trying to do that, but I don't remember who it was.

That is the same guy. He's thinking it'll be 2 years down the road before he's able to do it. He's not sure if he's going to pelletize or not at this point. He's guessing that his prices will be $6-$8 per pound.

Like Ron said, thats definitely the same guy. Seeing the talk recently I emailed them to see if they ever make it to the market or anywhere in Halifax that they could bring hops to sell. I got a very long, detailed response on how their hop business is going, working, and their future plans for it all without asking. To answer my question they said if possible they would sell fresh hops from the farm for 12.50/pound or less if you wanted to pick them yourself, and that a deal could be worked out for people willing to pick their own. Seemed like pretty nice people.
