Lagering in bottles

Post by adams81 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 8:44 pm

Is it possible? What's the impact on the process? Have you done it?

I've searched a bunch, so far people mostly mention the process taking longer - not sure that I trust the source though.

There's a pils in my chamber and I want to cold crash another carboy. Pils is at around day 18.

Lagering in a carboy then bottling means you may need to add yeast when bottling the finished product. 1/4 of a pack to help carbonate your bottles given that your beer has been lagered for a good while. Whether or not you did a starter for the beer, the yeast should flocculate a fair bit leaving you missing some to get whatever volume of Co2 per bottle. To keep things simple I would lager in the bottle that way you're not dealing with adding yeast, priming, bottle. Do it once and then chill and forget for awhile.

Kegging makes things easier. Carboy cold crash and lager. When done rack to keg and win... Lager is the main reason I'm building a keezer and getting into kegging. Makes it easier to enjoy and you can multi purpose your keezer as a lager chamber.

You can also lager in the keg while carbonating. Easier than slinging full carboys in and out of the keezer.

Very true, much more efficient.

Perfect, thanks for the advice. Another excuse to start kegging sooner!
