Lee Valley Water Meter

Just noticed this in the latest Lee Valley email special...

This small meter lets you gauge your water consumption accurately.
Threaded onto standard 3/4" faucet or hose fittings, it not only measures the volume of the current watering session in litres or U.S. gallons, but also records cumulative usage (up to 999.9 in either unit), so you can monitor consumption over a longer duration.
You can zero the current-use reading at any time without deleting the cumulative total. Amounts are shown to one decimal place on the digital display.
The unit shuts off automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity to preserve battery life, resetting the current-use reading only. Operating on a simple internal paddle wheel, it works with flow pressure up to 80 psi.
Button-cell battery and instructions included. ABS body.
Reasonably priced @ $12.50.

Could this be used for monitoring keg level I wonder? I would think the cummulative could be reset each time you put it on a new keg?
Might be tough getting the beer through this without it causing foaming though..

Just placed an order, hope it is decently accurate. Great for measuring out water for my HLT.

Bought a couple in town: Friday night is the time to hit up Lee Valley, no line! Will do some testing tomorrow. One had your name on it, Hogie. I'll put it in the yeast care package.

Used mine for the first time tonight, accurately measured the volume of my kettle (9 gal), and my measuring bowl (2 liters), so it is very good for measuring out water volumes for your HLT.

I had a hose bib installed under the sink in the new bathroom and this is awesome... what type of hose should I use for filling up my keggle for BIAB? I remember Hogie talking about how bad an idea a garden hose was

You'd be looking for something like an RV drinking water hose, something that's used for potable water. Word of warning, try the water coming out of one of those as well before you commit to using it on brew day. I had a bad experience with an RV hose I bought from Kent and ended up dumping a batch of beer as a result.
If you have a relatively short run from your water source to your brew area, I'd suggest using silicon tubing fitted with a hose fitting. A little pricer per ft. likely, but guaranteed to work.

Yeah, it works really well and totally worth the price!

For this, you might even go with the thin walled stuff. Much cheaper.

Picked up a RV/Marine hose at Princess Auto in hfx based on a suggestion from here. Price was decent and it's advertised as being drinking water safe.

Like I said, test it first. The one I bought gave the water a rubbery taste and the beer was in the fermenter before I noticed.

How are folks liking this water meter? Pretty accurate (would like to use it for measuring out mash water)?

I used it on the last brewday, and am happy with the accuracy. While filling 20+ litres of water, it matched up with the lines at 5, 10, 15, and 20L on my bucket. I also used it to fill a 2L measuring cup, and it was within 0.1L the whole time.
Go for it.
I also used it during the last brew day to measure how much water I was using while cooling the wort in preparation for pitching. It was actually less than I had feared, which made me feel good.

Great! Should really make it easy to fill up the cooler before a hybrid BIAB session.
