Re: Brewha 3-in-1 kettle & jacketed conical (BIAC)
Yeah, there were 2 different questions in my post.
One was regarding using the teflon sealant on the threaded connection for the heating element and the nut holding it in the box.
The second question was regarding using thermal paste to improve the conductivity of the dead space in the thermowell. I wasn't planning on using teflon sealant in my thermowell.

You don't need teflon on that nut thread if it's what I think it is. The seal is made by the rubber ring on the element.

The link below has the instructions I was following, and was the reason I was asking. I jut wasn't sure why the teflon sealant is suggested.

That tape isn't doing fuck all there afaiac, but it won't hurt either, so long as you don't make a messy job and leave strands between the oring and the contact surfaces.

Which side of the electrical box should the black rubber ring from the element be on? The side with the triclover, or inside the box?

Yeah, I was just curious if the outside made more sense, to prevent water from making its way "inside" the box.

My bad - thought you meant teflon tape being used instead of thermal compound.mr x wrote:It's not for thermal use. Teflon tape is used to keep npt threads from leaking. Afaiac, thermal grease isn't of much value in a process where the mass being measured is not flowing, and is much larger than the well. But it won't hurt...

I've got to say, the service from these guys is great. Just exchanged a few emails with Nathan from Brewha and he is sending me 3 replacement casters (2 are really bent and the 3rd is questionable), along with their fermenter to keg transfer line to make up for the damage/troubles. Stand up guy for sure.

Haha, looks familiar, I guess I had the right idea. Stainless ball lock, cool.

Not yet - maybe next weekend. Replacement casters are on the way so I'll likely wait for those. I also need to give everything a good cleaning..picked up some PBW tonight so I can give all the parts and the conical a good soak/cycle with the PBW and pump.
Side note: This came with a stainless head chugger pump. Did anyone else who purchased a chugger pump find it had a really strong smell?

Is it kind of an oil smell?

I'm thinking that's probably what it is..but it smells like mothballs or somethingJayme wrote:Is it kind of an oil smell?
Just found it odd because my March pump didn't have the slightest smell.

Mine smelled like Princess Auto - just reminds me of a discount store smell where everything is imported.Jimmy wrote:I'm thinking that's probably what it is..but it smells like mothballs or somethingJayme wrote:Is it kind of an oil smell?

That will involve changing the lens on my camera. The 50mm I was using is too close up for inside pics.
Just came across this, though. Interesting..

I just got an email from Brewha that they are going to sell a condenser arm that will attach to the 3-in-1!

It also came with one of the hop baskets and a hanging graduated measuring stick. The stick has markings up to 85 liters, and looks like there's about another 5 liters room above that marking. I likely won't be using the hop basket for hops, but it would probably be good for additions like orange peel or other things you might want to keep out of the fermenter.

I never though of that, but it would be relatively easy to attach a reflux column...

What kind of final volumes would you be talking from a batch this size? I've never really looked into it before, and curious how much you actually get compared to your starting volume.mr x wrote:I never though of that, but it would be relatively easy to attach a reflux column...
