It depends on the percentage of your wash. IIRC using a 'standard' sort of sugar wash, in a 5 gallon batch you'd be looking at 1 gallon (and I think that's after discarding the start and the end).

I can't even remember. I was doing 8.5kg sugar into 6 gallons fermented out to 20-22% abv. Then distill.

Passed the leak test, and ran 65 liters up to mash temp.

I'll likely be taking part of the bench out and installing countertop and a utility sink. Also need to get an exhaust hood setup.

:rockin:
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Does anyone who knows anything about range hoods/ventilation know if this would be sufficient for brewing? I know the CFM is really high, but from my understanding it means nothing if the hood can't create sufficient pressure. I'll likely be running duct work about 10' from where the hood is, and ideally will only have 1 90* bend (right at the exit of the hood). Seems like a decent price, though I doubt the real price is anywhere near $900.

With all those baffles, I think that will drip a lot of condensation.

Chillin like a villain.

Side note. Has anyone used the braided silicone tubing before? This setup came with the braided silicone tubing and I'm using my old regular tubing for a blowoff. It's crazy how much stronger the braided stuff seems. It's much more rigid and less prone to kinking.

I'm not sure where it comes from..I haven't really seen it advertised before - that's why I was curious about it. I'll post a pic shortly.

Looks like good stuff, I'm looking for some good 'less kinkable' hose for my setup. Doesn't need to handle hot water, so I think silicone may be overkill, but I like the flexibility it has as well.

The guys you bought this setup off of are in Canada? Maybe they can provide a source?

More Beer has a new type of high heat tubing as well that isn't actually silicone and is supposed to be harder to kink etc. May be another thing to consider.

I'd still try to avoid Hot Side Aeration. It's not as significant as was previously thought to be, but may still have an impact. Much less important than many other things. Is it worth putting the end of that tube just below the surface of the wort?

Not likely. The mash is FULL of O2 regardless.

All that HSA stuff was based on theory. The Heady Topper guy is a big believer in it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdfySDN2mF0#t=3484" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is a very sensible discussion by Charles Bamforth on the matter: http://beersmith.com/blog/2014/01/31/fl ... odcast-74/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It’s quite possible that oxygenating your mash with a waterfall cascade might actually enhance the quality of the beer …I wonder if anyone has investigated that possibility.

I'm going to be installing my exhaust setup this week and was wondering where the best place is to locate the inline exhaust fan. Should it be located as close to the kettle, or as close to the exit as possible?

I was thinking about going with the stainless bowl setup like this, but want to locate the fan wherever makes the most sense:

Princess Auto had those bowls on sale recently, can't recall exactly but it was a good price.

You want the least amount of resistance on the intake side, so close to the kettle.

I picked up the biggest bowl they had at cash and carry for $13. It's the same diameter as my conical - I would have liked for it to be a bit bigger, but I'll give it a go. I'm thinking if it's fairly close to the kettle it probably won't matter.

I just did a test run with this, boiling some water to see how the hood worked. The bowl seemed to work fine but the fan was leaking water from the holes where the screws hold the 2 halves of the fan body together, as well as the along the seam. Anyone have a solution?

Bigger bowl/hood?
