Vessel with a flat bottom

Post by Broob » Wed Jun 04, 2014 1:04 pm

I was making a yeast starter the other day using a one gallon glass jug and it was extremely difficult to get the magnet in the right spot as the bottom of the jug is rounded. I know I need an Erlenmeyer flask and I'm going to get one as soon as I get a chance to get out to Dave's but does anybody know of anything easy to find in the mean time that has a flat bottom and would work reasonably well to make a starter?

I've used a large no-name mason-style jar in the past that worked pretty well. Picked it up at either the dollar store or Superstore, can't remember which.

do you have any flat bottom bowls or baking dishes that can sit on your stir plate? Mixing bowls are usually cupped in the right direction, but a thick base of melamine and silicone might shield the magnets. A 2 quart or larger glass measuring cup would have a flat bottom. If you aren't storing it for long it doesn't need to have a narrow top or a lid, just cover it with foil if it is in the fridge and you worry about it plastic cling wrap will give you an airtight seal.

What's your stir bar like? Does it have a ring in the middle? I have one without a ring that I use in mason jars, seems to work fine.

Has a ring in the middle. Where do you get them without the ring?

Mine came from Hopdawgs 3 years ago but you can probably find them elsewhere.

Sent from the brew timer.

Bought a 2 L cylindrical vase from the dollar store. Bottom is slightly concave and works perfectly.

Just bought a 3cm one from Dave at everwoodbrewshop when I was there tonight.
