I just read that you can use an infrared temperature gun, run it up the keg, where you see a sharp change in temp, that is approx where the beer level is.
This sounds like what the SmartStrip is doing, but you have to activate with hot water.
Have not tried this, I have the SmartStrips, but will try tonight.

I'm thinking the next time digital temp guns go on sale for 20 bucks at CT I'll be investing

I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber

Quaintest thoughts - queerist fancies

What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

That might be now. It was in their Fathers Day flyer for $20. We got one late last week so they should still be on sale, though I'll be damned if I can find the thing on their website to double-check that the sale's still on.

The other option is to weigh the keg... subtract the weight of the empty keg.

it was a 4 day sale only, but luckily my CT is filled with incompetent workers who didn't take the tag down so I got it for the sale price about an hour ago.

Weighing the kegs is not practical for me . They are in a fridge and I don't care to kick up sediment every time I want an idea of how full or empty it is.

Princess Auto has one on for $30 this week, online at least. Haven't seen the store flyer.
