Anyone know of a local, or Canadian source for a cask breather?

Some people use propane regulators instead. They are really cheap. Google it maybe and see what you think.

...or just run your normal CO2 setup at 2.2 PSI. Check carbonation tables. That should give you 1.2 vol carbonation at cellar temp = real ale carbonation levels.

Re: Cask Breather
I'm not sure of the inner workings of the propane regulator (or the cask breather), but I'm looking for something that can't creep up in pressure. One of the regulators I use now for my CO2 tanks has a pressure creep that I don't trust. I plan on hooking this up to my conical and don't want to chance over-pressurizing it.

I believe the propane regulator works on the same principal as the cask breather, but it might take a bit more googling if you have time. The best explanation I've seen of how the cask breather works is in the cellarmanship book. I quickly googled the propane regulator and it has a similar diaphragm setup.

Re: Cask Breather
JImmy are you doing a spundling valve type of thing where you carb in the fermenter?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

No, just trying to provide positive pressure for when I cold crash in the conical - I want something that doesn't run the risk of over pressurizing it.

Re: Cask Breather
For the probable cost of a cask breather, couldn't you just replace the CO2 reg. with a new one?

Re: Cask Breather
Here's the one I have and where I picked it up;
http://www.ukbrewing.com/Cask_Breather_p/40030.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
These things are designed to bleed off excess CO2 pressure above 5 psi. So if you've got a creeping regulator, the cask breather will make sure you don't end up over carbonating your beer but anything over 5 psi will be released and you'll end up with an empty tank. You're likely better off with a new regulator or a spunding valve.

It's basically a spundig then.

Jim, I have some parts and pieces if you want to have a look to set up a secondary regulator after your tank.

I didn't plan on using the shitty reg for this - was just making the point that it's something I'm trying to protect against should the regulator I am using decide to fail. I still have a good reg, but I'm not really trusting of any reg at this point.

Re: Cask Breather
A sub regulator off your secondary has far less in comming preasure so is less likely to creap.
My secondary is set to carbonate and the subs are for serving.

Re: Cask Breather
Like someone mentioned before. People use propane regulators for this for cask ales (there was an article in BYO). The average bbq propane regulator should be set for around 0.4psi.

Re: Cask Breather
Is there no prv on your tank? If not you should add one.
Just pressurize the tank headspace to 3 or 4 psi, (or 10 psi, or whatever you like) when you crash cool, then turn the CO2 off. That'll ensure the tank doesn't vacuum.

Anyone know where to buy an adjustable PRV/Spunding valve locally, or from a Canadian vendor? I'd like to buy one as a unit, not piece it together.

Try Stellar Industrial for pvrv. If they don't sell them they can likely point you to who does.

Me Chris? You were kind enough to give me a secondary gauge, but don't believe I have a prv from you.

Ya you. A small brass PRV. It was at the single hop get together. You may have given it back or to someone else.
Jim the secondry offer is still there.

Sorry, I don't remember that, and can't find it in my box of goodies. I might have passed it on, you're right.
