Building a Kegerator

Post by maestro » Fri Sep 05, 2014 9:41 am

Greetings All!

So I think I'm at the point where I want to start kegging. Primarily because bottling is such a pain, and I want to have a clean, clear beer and not have to worry about the pour.

So I put it out there to my fellow brewnosers....is there anyone out there that can or will build a kegerator for a decent price? Everywhere I look people are asking far too much for old/used kegerators and even some that are built from companies seem pretty steep.

If you know someone or are someone that can work with me on this, please contact me.

Alternatively, if you are getting rid of a piece here or there (mainly kegs or C02 tanks) message me and let me know. YES Yes I know, watch the classified section and check Kijiji. But I figure if someone sees it before me, they might help out.

Thanks for now! Happy brewing!

From my (admittedly more limited experience - but I have build my own keezer), there's always suitable fridges/freezers popping up on Kijiji. Setup some alerts or RSS feed to watch for new items, as the well-priced ones will go quickly. Kegs do show up (more on here in our Classifieds section than Kijiji I find...), but your biggest single cost will be the CO2 tank and regulator - they're not cheap, and far rarer to show up on Kijiji.

I ended up putting a bit of money aside from every paycheque while I watched Kijiji for things, and eventually just bought the CO2 tank & reg from Everwood.

I setup an e-savings account where I put a portion of each paycheck for beer related purchases... that account gets emptied quickly

I would add that with a little research and time, you'll do a cheaper job building one yourself.

I bought a prefab Danby kegerator off ebay (the seller was from New Brunswick) for around $600 delivered to Pictou County.

They say in construction, when considering Time v. Quality v. Price, you can have one or two out of three, but you can't have all three

Nick,
Find a cheap fridge or freezer on Kijiji. Rest of it you will probably need to order from Dave. From my experience go with the perlicks, don't get the cheap taps, they gum up way to quickly.

Your largest expense will be kegs. Rest of it can be done fairly cheap.
I'd be willing to build this out with you at your place sometime if you are near by. A few things you need to consider.

a) What is your budget?
b) How many taps you want? Your budget and fridge size will dictate this.
c) Are you going with Ball lock or Pin Lock kegs. (I'd recommend ball locks, cost more but are worth the bit extra).

After that it's a matter of marking your tap locations, drilling a couple holes and the rest is history. :cheers2:

Keith,
Thanks for the advice/offer. Glad to see that there are people offering such great help. However, I am no where near you! I'm out in Greenwood, so a bit of a drive from Lower Sackville. But appreciate it anyway.

Besides, Dave got ahold of me and we have something worked out. He's a super nice guy and very knowledgeable.

Thanks again! :cheers2:
