Hopped up Lagers

Post by Broob » Wed Sep 17, 2014 4:04 pm

Never done a lager before as I've only had a decent fermentation chamber for the last few months. Not a fan of the macro light lagers out there but I've been reading a bit about the heavily hopped lagers that people have been doing lately and it seems intriguing. Anybody have any experience with these India pale lagers?

Nash's Intergalactic SMaSH'd lager was awesome.
Intergalactic SMaSH'd Lager hits the taps today at 4:00 PM!

Brewed exclusively with Superior Pale Ale malt and Galaxy hops. An intergalactic amped-up lager; hopped to the hilt starting at the mash and finishing with multiple dry-hop additions. The single malt brew coupled with the clean lager fermentation make this an epic canvas for a true taste of this newer Australian hop cultivar.

Brewed with love and pummelled with verbs. Please enjoy!

Vital Stats:

OG - 16.0 P / 1.065
ABV - 7.1 %
IBUs ~ 70
Malts - Pale Ale
Hops - Galaxy
Hop Rate - 4.0 lbs/bbl
SRM ~ 5

It was definitely tasty.... Any questions let me know. Not a lot to tell though, basically brew it like an IPA then ferment it as a lager.

That's what I read but I do have some questions. Do you raise the temperature for dry hopping? And how long to age it?
Thanks

Jever Pils is pretty hoppy and is a traditional German beer. Been around forever. Surprises the uninitiated.

Has anybody else tried the hops & bolts IPL? Made by loud & noisy, which I think is actually creemore. In any case it's a really tasty beer
Kegged:
Bottled: Chocolate Orange Stout, Barkshack Sparkling Ginger Mead, Cherry Berliner
Fermenting: Fruit (havent decided yet) Lambic
Considering: Imperial Chocolate Raspberry Stout, Fir Tip Ale

Yup you should let it rise to ambient room temp before dry-hopping. Aging will depend greatly how ballsy the beer is. Intergalactic SMaSHED was ~ 5 weeks grain to glass, It really wouldn't be out of range to do a beer like that in 3 weeks.

I've never used a lager yeast. Any recommendations on a particular strain?
