Lab supplies from Dal

Post by jacinthebox » Fri Oct 24, 2014 11:02 am

I had no idea that Dal had a store, and sold to the public. Local place for lab supplies (glassware, stir-bars, other cool mad science stuff).

Awesome! If I was into culturing up yeast from bottles or trying to maintain a yeast ranch in my fridge, this would be perfect.

They have Ethyl Alcohol 100%, I wonder what you could make with that and some flavouring agent?
Currently on tap:
1) Festa Brown Ale
2) Festa Pale Ale
3) Best Case Northern Lights
4) Festa Continental Pilsner

In the bucket: Empty
In the carboy: Empty

Shouldn't unless I've been told wrong. Maybe you're thinking of Methanol.

Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, drinking alcohol or grain alcohol, is a flammable, colorless, slightly toxic chemical compound, and is best known as the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as alcohol. Its molecular formula is variously represented as EtOH, CH3CH2OH, C2H5OH or as its empirical formula C2H6O (which it shares with dimethyl ether).

Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, carbinol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha or wood spirits, is a chemical compound with chemical formula CH3OH. It is the simplest alcohol, and is a light, volatile, colourless, flammable, poisonous liquid with a distinctive odor that is somewhat milder and sweeter than ethanol (ethyl alcohol). At room temperature it is a polar liquid and is used as an antifreeze, solvent, fuel, and as a denaturant for ethyl alcohol. It is also used for producing biodiesel via transesterification reaction.

If I remember from my undergrad days, they somehow denature the EtOH to make it more toxic

100% is exactly that and you can drink it. Fucks you up but you can drink it. 95% is denatured with 5% methanol and is used almost exclusively in the undergrad labs to prevent people from drinking it. We used to have the professor we worked for order us the 100% because we said it did a better job cleaning the glassware.

my understanding is that pure 100% ETOH can only be achieved with a vacuum, and that it will absorb H2O from the air until it's about 96%
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Hi everyone,

I work in the Tupper so if you have questions I can probably answer them if needed.

Also, the website clearly states "Sale of chemicals, alcohol and liquid nitrogen are only permitted to Dalhousie and affiliated customers.".

In addition, even for those working at Dal, the ordering of 100% ethanol is much more restricted than the normal lab grade ethanol.

That makes sense, I guess I'll just make my own.

Hey Morgan, do you have any more laminar flow hoods? I'm still looking for one of those.

95% ethanol usually has a chemical that makes you throw up. We use it for undergraduate labs to avoid stealing and drinking

96% on the other hand is pure, and makes a great vodka substitute. It is however very tightly regulated and we have to account for everything that we use.

Back in Iceland it was not regulated at all in the lab I worked in, we had a big 200 litre drum of the stuff and nobody noticed if few litres went missing here and there :spilly: :spilly: :spilly:

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA
