Use the gas in it. It don't go bad..

Talking about Simplex-Grinnell, I used to get all my refills and recerts done there. This past late winter, I went in for a fill and they refused to fill me. Said it was because they didn't sell food grade CO2. I told them the last time I signed a waiver, but they still said they wouldn't do it due to the waiver not standing up in court should it had ever come to that point.
Luck was with me though, as I got it filled a few doors away with Praxair and also recertified my tank for a reasonable price. Not as cheap as Simplex though IIRC.

Thanks Tony.
That's handy info about Praxair. Are they cheaper than Brenton's?

I need a refill now, anyone else know if this is now Simplex-Grinnell's policy or was this a one-off?

Food grade CO2? I had zero clue there was a difference. Is it based on the way the CO2 is produced?

S-04: that is not the date stamp. It will be two digits for the month, a symbol (sometimes a letter in a circle, etc), then two digits for the year (it is the date of the test, not when it must be redone). However, like Tony, I say use it.

Not so much that there is food-grade CO2 that there are food-grade tanks.

Thanks for the information Chris, I'm really not sure what I'm looking at here. There is one other mark that I thought might be a date stamp, but it still only has one digit where the months should be. I'm actually going to pick the tank up tomorrow morning - so far I've only seen the pictures. Apparently it has about 6# of co2 in it, so I should be able to go for a while before I have to have it tested and filled anyway. :)

Not sure if it is a policy everywhere, but that's what they told me it was here in Mount Pearl.

Co2 is CO2 but like Chris says, food grade depends on the tank it is dispensed from. I never had any problems with not using food grade gas ;)

"food grade" CO2 has to do with the mixture of gas in the tank, not the tank itself per say as explained on this site, http://www.praxair.com/gases/buy-liquid ... b=overview, under the purity and mixtures tab .

All spec sheets look the same to me in the link you provided. I would say it is there for legal reasons only.

Hi S-04: you found the right stamp. Your tank was manufactured in February of 1986. If you can't find any other stamps similar to this, then it hasn't been re-certified, and will need to get done before refilling. These tanks have a long lifetime, so it will probably pass.

Thanks Steve/Char: I stand corrected on the food grade CO2 tank vs. gas. That is Praxair specific, but the point is well taken. It would have to do with what filters and holding tanks they are using.

Wildcard: That was Tony's experience in St. John's, NL. There have been no reports of people being turned away at the Simplex in Dartmouth.

chalmers: ok good news then. I know here in Moncton Simplex sends there tanks to Brunswick Fyr. They aren't a full station here in Moncton.

That and Praxair is outrageously expensive for refills too.

And I would think it's in everyone's best interest not to bring up the subject.

Unless they've changed policy in the last few weeks, it is.

FYI - just had my 5lb tank tested and filled at Simplex Dartmouth. No issues, $25 for the hydro and $2.25/lb for the fill. They apologized that they couldn't do it the same day because the tech was out sick.

They now accept both cash or credit, but not debit . They are also selling "draft" CO2 cylinders, 5, 10, and 20 pounds starting at $89.

$89 is the 5lber? Anyone know how much NG charges for a 5er?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

They are not new, but I believe they are freshly hydro'd. The ones they had are steel.

5lb - $89
10lb - $125
15lb - $135

Anybody doing a Simplex run over the next couple weeks? I've got a 5lber I need to get filled.

I pass by Simplex twice a day. If no one is getting theirs done I can grab it and get it filled.

If it's not out of your way, that would be great. I would like to have it as a backup for hoptoberfest. Give it another day or two, and if nobody is going over, we'll do it.
