Whiskey

Post by Keith » Tue Dec 30, 2014 9:05 pm

Well I've been tasked with making some whiskey for my Father in law and Step Father. I don't see any real threads on here. Is this even legal in Nova Scotia? IF so does anyone have any recommendations?

It's legal to sell those. Not legal to use them to make whiskey in NS without a licence.

Then they would expect it. I'll tell them it's illegal and will be one less thing for me to do. Fortunately they aren't craft beer drinkers and stay clear of my brews lol.

regardless, the air stills or whatever for distilling water wouldn't work for whiskey. large producers make whiskey using a copper head pot still, i dont think anything else would work the same or else producers would have switched to them. the people up at glenora have copper head pot stills too.

Anybody ever have any success adding whisky to a beer? Seems soaking oak chips in whisky and adding to secondary is a nice way to add the whisky flavour. I'm thinking about a potential whisky stout, but would like to hear if anybody has done anything similar. Thoughts?

I'd just like to point out that I have yet to hear of a single case of anyone in Canada being charged with anything on the whole distillation side of things unless they were selling it.

But yeah, technically illegal. Not sure I would let that stop me personally, but I figure at least for now I still have a lot to learn on beer and wine, which is both legal and something I already own a ton of equipment for.

Not to mention that in my situation I'd rather not have anything I'd get evicted for since I live in an apartment. Wouldn't want a landlord seeing a condenser or jars of 'shine when they come in for their annual fire alarm test or whatever... Perhaps a hobby better left for when I can experience the joys of home ownership. Especially since even with the beer stuff I'm worried someone ignorant to the whole affair might report me for going all breaking bad thinking I'm making meth or something with all these pumps, tanks, kegs, liquid lines, hoses, chillers, propane burners, etc.

We have actually had that happen... Neighbour down the hall was convinced and first thing the cops came knocking. Luckily they weren't as stupid haha.

LOL I brew on my 2nd floor balcony which is directly above the sidewalk and I get a lot of strange looks. The police haven't come knocking yet though.
