Electric BIAB

Post by Mac_Brew » Thu Jan 22, 2015 11:15 pm

Looking at moving into all-grain after a year of kits. Want to use an electric coil system, probably a blichmann boil coil into another brand of pot. Concerned about the bag touching the coil and ruining it. Anyone have any experience with this set-up and suggestions? Looking at a a 10-gallon maybe 15-gallon setup. expect to do mainly 5-gallon batches. Can you utilize a metal fry basket to maintain separation of the bag and element? Sorry if there is an earlier thread on this topic.

Thanks,

Jeff

You can't have the bag in contact with the element when it is on, but you can heat the water with the element to strike temp, turn the element off, mash in, pull the bag of grain out after the mash is done, then boil the wort with the element. So that would work fine. :cheers2:

That's what i have heard but just wondering if there is a delay required to cool element or other risks?

No delay, maybe a minute or two, the element is immersed in water and cools almost as soon as the power is turned off. That would be a good setup. I have the boil coil in one of my pots and really like it.

Thanks Mark. I really appreciate your input. So much to learn and sometimes look at things differently. See you are in Wolfville. Grew up in the Valley and my folks are still in Kentville. Maybe we can grab a pint and chat next time I am down that way?

Sounds great Jeff. :cheers3: Come for a brewing session too if you want/have the time. I have a sort of a BIAB setup, but do 12 gallons, and instead of pulling the BIAB bag out, I pump to a second vessel. I find that less messy in the kitchen.

I had a thought about your boil coil BiAB. I wondered if the BIAB bag might get wedged inside the boil coil so that when you pulled the bag out, it might pull the coil up with it and damage the coil. Maybe it wouldn't. Perhaps stir the mash before you pull the bag out. Something to be careful of/think about.

Becky makes very good bags to order, if you need one: http://www.biab-brewing.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Will keep that in mind. Have already e-mailed Becky so just have to settle on a size. Next time I am down your way will give you a shout. Would be great to see your set-up.

Thanks,

Jeff :cheers2:

Do any of the Truro boys do eBrewing? If not I'm in Westville if you ever want to co-brew.

No...but I'm also seriously considering making the switch in the near future as well.

You could also use a false bottom of you wanted to keep a constant heat I assume, at least that's what I was planning on doing.

With the boil coil though, the false bottom would have to be quite high up. There would be quite a large dead space below the false bottom and efficiency would suffer quite a lot, unless you had a pump recirculating during the mash, and then you get into the delights of stuck sparges and all that great stuff.

Actually, if you look at the website for the blichmann boil coil it states that it cannot be used with a false bottom.

Bottom Drain Electric Sanke Build - "Ivan"

This is how I built my setup. I'm pretty happy with it. I do cooler BIAB in a 70qt Coleman extreme and 5 gallon eBIAB in the keggle.

Dave's elements are in, I just installed a camco 5500W stainless in my pot.
The dryer plug, dial controller set-up is a fairly straight forward build.

How much was the 5500w?

I remembered Daves secret web search code:
https://www.everwoodavebrewshop.com/sea ... ecords=999

and the 4500w
https://www.everwoodavebrewshop.com/sea ... ecords=999

Best to confirm with him if it's officially listed yet.

It's some sort of SCR, same one some others have used. The grill is a cookie rack with extended legs.
