Tips to dismantle a co2 regulator?

Post by mcgster » Sat Feb 07, 2015 4:30 pm

Picked up a cheap co2 reg the other day to turn mine into a 2 stage and i can't for the life of me get the input port (the one that normally screws onto the tank) off. I have tried big ass pipe wrenches, and ratchets and it won't budge.. normally i'd heat it up and try again but with a rubber diaphragm i don't think that is a good option.

Seems to me there was a thread on here where someone was having similar difficulties only to discover that the connection in question was reverse threaded. Have you considered that possibility?

The thread in question is here in case that helps.

Thanks! It does look like a reverse thread fitting but it is hard to tell. If i remember the threads on a normal fitting rise from left to right (so as you turn it to clockwise it moves in further) and reverse thread is the opposite. I have tried giving it a lot of force in both directions and it refuses to budge..

For my two regs, my high pressure connections are left hand thread.

Any tips on getting them off, its hard to counter hold these against the pressure you need to try and get the threads loosened

I got mine apart with two wrenches and an extra hand to keep everything steady.

My guess is that you'll need a vise to hold it secure enough to break the thread lock.

I'll keep at it using this technique, maybe it will eventually give!

So i was able to get everything apart but it looks like the nipple i have to join the two is incorrect. It looks like one side has to be LHT and the other RHT. Is this something i should be able to pick up locally?

Yes i think that is exactly what i need!

I wonder if that is something that i could find in town or if it would be an order in only.

OBK was the only place I came across that had the LHT to RHT nipple.

Ackland Grainger may also be somewhere to try?
