Forum BJCP Judges

Post by mcgster » Thu Mar 12, 2015 1:00 pm

I'm not sure if this will be a popular idea or not but is there anyway we could have a sticky or something mentioning all the members who are BJCP judges?

I think its helpful to know who is, and having a list could also be beneficial.

Thoughts?

They are a discrete underground organization.

They are plotting to have people from all over the country send them beer. :D

As I said before ...well informed judges are a big part of this fantastic craft beer movement which is re-creating historic styles and making authentic beers, historic and recent from around the world. I think Brewnoser judges are among the best, and we have a lot of them.

That's what I was wondering about. They were all over the forum, but requested that we deactivate their account. Haven't heard anything about it since..

I appreciate the sentiment, but that really doesn't answer my question. What would a sticky or a list provide? The forum is already littered with content hidden everywhere.

If you have a judge or exam question there are always judges active here to answer. If it's a beer question, being a judge doesn't mean you have all the answers any more than buying yourself a barrel system and calling yourself a pro.

So...list?

Andrew, having a list of the judges on the forum would be useful as general information and others may want to pick someones brain over PM instead of starting a thread. If you are against the idea that is fine. I just thought it would be useful because i have often wondered this myself.

I could see a Brewnoser wiki being beneficial, as you said. We have the content. Just can be buried and often hard to find. However as to the list, I'm not sure I'd want my name published. Could cause them a lot of headache with a influx of questions on every beer brewed. Least the forums leave it to a broader audience.

I think a list is fine, but should be voluntary (ie, judges opt in, rather than be added unknowingly).

You could always edit your first post to add names to the list.

Fire me on the list, I am a judge.

I doubt anyone would be messaging BJCP judges about normal brewing questions. I would imagine the questions would be pointed towards exam prep or things of the like. I have never PM'd any of the judges on here a general brewing question at least i can't imagine anyone else would.

I'm not a judge, it was just a example. I've been on other lists in the past for other stuffs and can be a pita if you get a serious influx of questions about every beer which may be more beneficial in a thread or were already answered previously. I can see it being great but might become more of a headache for the judges.

what about an "asked a bjcp judge" thread? that way only anyone who wants to engage as a judge can.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

That would be a good thread to have on here. It wouldn't preclude this thread or any other ideas. It could be "ask a beer judge" as more cicerones come along they could answer.

Mark, do you want to change the title of this thread to "Ask the Beer Judge"?
