Bazooka screen on new kettle?

Post by denislemieux » Fri Mar 27, 2015 12:59 pm

So I went to brew a batch over the weekend and found a small pinhole in my kettle, it was just a cheap candiantire pot, so not a big deal but was annoying and I am now in need of some proper equipment.

I am looking to get a real kettle from Dave with a ballvalve etc. Now I am just wondering if I should bother with a bazooka screen or a 3 piece ball valve on it. I am going BIAB right now and use pellet hops, I like the idea of the bazooka screen helping clear the trub before hitting the fermentor....but my concern is the pellet hops clogging the screen.

Anyone have any opinions on the subject?

They will clog the screen. Just get the 3 piece ball valve. :)

^I agree

The bazooka screen is great for a mash tun but there is a possibility that the hops can clog the screen. I never recommend a screen for a kettle, just a mash tun. Plus, if it can get through a bag, it'll get through the screen. If you really want to reduce the amount of trub then buying a few hop bags will allow you to add your bittering and flavour/aroma additions without letting those hops get into the fermenter. But compared to the amount of yeast and sediment that you get the hops are a very small percentage (unless you're throwing in a significant amount).

I have found that I get a significant amount of trub from the grain alone when doing BIAB that is what I was hoping the bazooka screen would help with. But I have also just been using the cheap paint strainer bags so that is likely the reason for that happening. With the new kettle I will either be buying a custom bag or making one myself of better material, so I am hoping that will reduce it. Most of my brews are actually fairly light on hops anyway.

Nothing wrong with trub. I ferment right in the boil kettle. There are some suggesting it improves the beer:

It may just be that it doesn't matter.

When I bought my kettle from OBK I got a bazooka screen with it. First time I used it, the screen clogged with hop material, and it wasn't even a particularly hoppy recipe. I've never used it since.

Plus, like Mark says, the little baby yeasts like hot break material and hop matter.
Give a man a beer, and he'll waste an hour. Teach a man to brew, and he'll waste a lifetime.

They work great as false bottoms in mash tuns, but very useless in the kettle. I bought one with my kettle, but just used it for my cooler mashtun build instead.

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA
