Oxyclean left in keg
Was just filling my keg up with some cider and saw some oxyclean crystals that made it by my rinse and sanitizing. Rookie mistake. I saw a few on my hose as well, presumably from running the side. I cleaned it off... But is it safe to drink?

I'd be a little nervous. Check out the following link and make your own decision. Did you sip it to see if it tasted bad? If so dump it.

Re: Oxyclean left in keg
How many crystals are we talking here? It sounds like there was a very small weight of crystals in a 19L batch of cider, so the dilution factor is huge (assuming they dissolve, which they may not, as they've made it this far without dissolving yet!). As Woody suggested, I'd taste a small portion to see if it tastes off, though of course that's not the best indication of safety (ie, not all poisons taste bad). I'm guessing you won't taste anything off, due to it being so dilute.
I read a couple of articles describing the ingredients, and none of them surprised or scared me. The hydrogen peroxide that is produced when Oxiclean is mixed with water will be long, long gone by now.
I'd probably drink it, but would inspect each glass for crystals. Do you have a way to filter the cider? That would give you peace of mind.
Caveat: I am not a doctor. But I am a chemist.

Re: Oxyclean left in keg
Thanks for the replies. I just tasted it and there is no taste of oxyclean at all. The dilution should be incredibly low, we are talking somewhere in the range of 5-50 crystals. The amount that I put in wouldn't likely fit bigger than a beer bottle cap, and I rinsed it twice.
I called poison control and they told me that I should dump it, because I cant confirm the dilution levels, and there could be a clump somewhere. I found only 4 crystals floating on the top of the beer. I can run it through cheese cloth, or I could even rent a filter machine from the brew store in town. I think it is likely find, and I am looking for a practical look at it from someone like a chemist - or someone whos experienced it before. Im likely thinking weve probably all done this at one time or another, and never noticed.

My thought is if you are still seeing crystals there could be much more that had dissolved. The stuff is soluble, and if there are visible crystals remaining, it could be a tell tale sign that there was a lot more in the keg.

He did rinse, so there can't be that much in there. The more I'm reading about it, the less worried I am about it. Found the MSDS: http://www.ahprofessional.com/msds/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
Did you say you only put in a bottlecap's worth to begin with? That is not a lot at all (less possible stuff in your cider), and I'm not sure if it would be an effective cleaner at that concentration.
Anyway, Spence knows my opinion. Good learning moment, regardless of what he does with this batch.

A PM moves from "outbox" to "sent" when the recipient opens it. So he hasn't read it yet.Spence wrote:Chamlers.. tried to PM you, sitting in outbox and not sent box.. did it get to you?
