Had a small plastic one. Upgraded to this. Should use it this week for the first time. Got it at Everwood.

mines just a metal slotted spoon. works pretty well but not quite long enough. dont like plastic (they dont have much strength when theyre hot). Wood also works well as long as you remember to clean it.

Anybody, aside from Keith, using the stainless paddle in a cooler mash Tun? Any concern about scratching the cooler and giving bacteria a home?

Bacteria in the mash tun isn't a huge concern, as everything gets boiled after that point

If you like wood, the Paderno Store is the place to go. I have the 70 and 100 cm ones.

That's the place. They may be even cheaper at one of the Forum sales (Halifax Forum, not Brewnosers Forum).

If you are looking to make your own and need a good piece of hardwood, check out East Coast Specialty Hardwoods on Wright in Burnside. They will sell you some of the scrap pieces left over for $8-15, depending on type of wood and overall size. They have hickory, oak, ash, cherry....basically any hardwood you want.

+1 When I made my mash paddles a while back, I picked up two 40" x 1" x 8", one cherry and one walnut, at East Coast for $8 each.
