Best options for DIY mush tun????

Post by mindless2 » Thu Jun 25, 2015 10:29 pm

Hey,
I've decided i'd like to start building my equipment for doing full grain or partial mashes.
I'd be doing 5 gallon batches but i'd like to have the option of 10 gallon batches.

Can anyone suggest some good options for making this?
I see people recommend, those coolers from home depot in the usa.

So what are some options that everyone is using and the parts are easily accessible here in canada??
pics would be good as well... if you have them...

Thanks for the patience with a beginner!!

Cheers
Todd

I think there are a few on here already made for sale...I know I posted one up for my buddy

Coleman blue 48ish quart...with ball valve and braided hose seem to be a popular choice. ..that's what I use for my 5gal batches ( full volume mash)...

I was thinking batch sparge to keep it simple... seems similar to biab, which I do now....

But I was also wondering about partial mashes... would that size mash tun be a little large for that??

I batch sparge with the coleman cooler and braided line with ball valve mentioned above and it works great and is a time saver.

But when doing a partial mash you normally mash your specialty grains in your kettle and then add your LME or DME when you are ready to boil. At least that is how I did it. You really don't need to use a mash tun for the small amount of specialty grain.

I use this same setup. I find heat retention to be a fairly large problem with this particular cooler. I need to start investigating some solutions.

I use the same set up and have done 10 gallon batches in it of 1.058 OG beer. Had to do two sparges but did the trick. As far as heat retention, I wrap it up in a sleeping bag and for 10 gallon, I lose maybe 1 degree in an hour. For 5 gallon, I get a bit more but add boiling water to bring the temp back up. Usually no more than 3L though.

My $.02 but get the made one and use it. I think Justin will give you a good deal and save you the work. He can give you the user notes too.
