Best Base malts to have on hand?

Post by mindless2 » Wed Aug 05, 2015 8:03 am

So now that all the parts have come in for the electric kettle, its time to go from partials to full!!

What are the best base malts to have on hand? I'm assuming 2-row ??
Also , anyone have an idea of the cost of these to the Saint John area? or maybe even just the basic cost??

Cheers,
Todd

I always maintain an inventory of 2 row, pilsen, wheat, and maris otter.

Out of those 4, the most important to me would be 2 row & pilsen...really it depends on what you plan on brewing.

Guess it depends mostly on 2 factors... What you plan to brew most and how often/how much you plan to brew.

I keep 2 row on hand large quantity (buy a 55lb sack). The rest I get once I have plans in place. I want to plan a bit further ahead now more so than in the past. Before I moved here from out west I gave a lot of more specialty type grains away because because they sat around.

That being said I use pilsner malt a fair bit too and would like to use marris otter more than in past.

:stupid:

I also like having Vienna and Munich on hand. For speciality grains I also like to keep 3-4 different types of crystal on hand. A little Chocolate and Roasted Barley never hurt either.
