Re: Screw cap bottles
Yeah they can, but they don't always seal well. I have a hand capper and last time I had to re do like half of them. Apparently some bench cappers do a decent Jon though

Re: Screw cap bottles
That is how I started out. Standard glass bottles with screw tops and a hand capper. Recently I found that the bottles are now not providing a good seal, I think this may have had to do with my capper wearing out though. I am now in the process of replacing those bottles with pop tops to avoid this in the future. I have also swapped to a bench capper since my hand capper was not sealing well. I have not tried screw top bottles yet with my new bench capper.
I should also mention that I have read that people have issues with bottle necks breaking on those types of bottles depending on the sturdiness of the bottle and capper used. Some are made thin and could be prone to breaking. I have not experience this however with my little red capper.

I'd recommend just going to the recycle depot and getting either Grolsch bottles or the crown caps. Definitely worth it.

Re: Screw cap bottles
When I first started out, that's all I used - twist off bottles and a bench capper. No issues with the bottles sealing and I was bottle conditioning everything at that time. As long as you stick with the "big brewery" bottles, you shouldn't have an issue with necks breaking as they are pretty sturdy and not as thin as some of the American counterparts.

Re: Screw cap bottles
I use a lot of them with a bench capper, and they've been working fine. They can be a little prone to oxidation though, so if you're sending to competitions or anything it might be worth looking for some crown caps.
