Monster Mill - Reg vs Pro, 2 Roller vs 3 Roller

Post by Jimmy » Mon Nov 09, 2015 7:07 pm

Looking for some practical feedback on Monster Mills.

I'm back and forth between the following:

MM-3: 3 roller mill with 1.5" diameter rollers
MM-2PRO: 2 roller mill with 2" diameter rollers

No idea which one is a better mill to go with. I spoke to Monster Mill on the phone today, and they weren't really able to suggest one mill over the other. They said people generally tend to have more problems with the 3 roller, but it's typically because of user error when mounting/adjusting the mill.

A 3 roller mill is supposed to keep the husks intact better than a 2 roller mill, but a larger diameter roller is supposed to accomplish the same thing. Does anyone see a benefit in going with the 3 roller mill? Does it make a difference when you consider your mash method (ie: BIAB, batch sparge, no sparge, fly sparge, recirculating during the entire mash, etc.)

I had a 3 roller mill but went back to a 2 roller mill. I had the problems of mounting and adjusting the mill that they say I guess.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Good to know. I'd tend to think you're fairly resourceful/handy, so if you were having troubles with it, it's probably difficult to use in general.

What was the symptom of the problem with the 3 roller mill?

The problem I had with it was getting the bottom roller going, most of the time I had to reach up underneath and help it "trap" some grain so It would roll. I adjusted the base and mounting several times but just grew tired of it and went back to the 2 roller. I have no issues with the 2 roller.

That's one of the issues he described to me - but said that particular issue isn't due to user error. He said if it's not something you want to deal with, he'd suggest a 2 roller mill.

If it's not user error, how would you deal with it anyhow? Confused.

He said it's just something that happens on occasion with the 3 roller mills. I didn't question it

I've been using this three roller mill for years without a hiccup...
