Mangrove Jack's???
Curious to know if people have any experience with Mangrove Jack's. I have never paid them much attention, for the silly reason, if I am to be honest, that their name sounds like a bad tropical-themed chain restaurant!
I just saw them in bulk on the list in the group buy and was surprised at how many additional dry yeasts they have available in 500 g packages. Wondering whether they are truly additions, or just repackagings of strains that are already available from Fermentis and Lallemand? For example, the characteristics of their West Coast Ale sounds a lot like S-05 and their British Ale Yeast sounds similar to S-04.

Re: Mangrove Jack's???
They are their own brand and been around for a while. I've used the Bohemian Lager before and it lagged for a good 3 - 4 days before activity. However I attribute that to bad storage of the yeast packets.
BTW the British Ale is supposed to be like WLP007 dry English Ale.

Re: Mangrove Jack's???
I have used their M44 West Coast yeast, and it is very similar to US-05 in that it really lets the hops shine through and I'd say even boosts citrussy and tropical aromas and flavours.
When i was getting started building my own recipes, I did also have serious lag problems pitching dry into the fermenter despite the instructions to do so. It was then i moved to US-05. At a guess I'd say the issues might be transit conditions as i think they are from New Zealand (or at least were). I'd definitely recommend using a starter.

Re: Mangrove Jack's???
This is part of what I was alluding to in the Group Buy thread: the common complaint about the MJ yeasts is the lag time. This has led some to speculate that there's not 200 billion cells in an 10g packet or that the viability of MJ yeast is more susceptible to storage/time issues. They are in Australia/New Zealand and there could be issues getting it to North America in a well-stored fashion.RubberToe wrote:I've used the Bohemian Lager before and it lagged for a good 3 - 4 days before activity. Having a brick of it would mean being able to easily adjust the pitch (e.g., 125% or 150% of a 10g packet) and potentially mitigating this issue.
I do know that it's gotten pretty hard to get MJ yeasts in Canada with Canada Homebrew Supplies being the only major retailer still listing them (Noble Grape had them, but apparently stopped last year, although I didn't think to ask why). So I suspect there's very little chance we'll be able to get them from NCM.

Re: Mangrove Jack's???
Currently finishing up fermentation with MJ West Coast on an APA. I pitched based on 11.5g of a Fermentis pack and it went nuts. Only after did I learn that their own individual packs are 10g. Can't wait for the results.

Where did you get the MJ West Coast? And are you suggesting you pitched 12.5 grams off a brick or that you pitched a 10g sachet and it went nuts anyway?dean2k wrote:Currently finishing up fermentation with MJ West Coast on an APA. (Also, aren't Fermentis sachets 11.5g?)

Brick share. 12.5g off the brick, not the sachet.mumblecrunch wrote: Where did you get the MJ West Coast? And are you suggesting you pitched 12.5 grams off a brick or that you pitched a 10g sachet and it went nuts anyway?

I have interest in a couple of these strains however do not see myself using a full brick. Not sure if its safe to divide up on split day or not?

I can't see a problem. As long as we have a scale and sanitary mason jars or something.

As an aside, I just noticed that their official Canadian wholesaler is in Dartmouth. Wonder if that presents opportunities...

That's Noble Grape. They had a bunch but it started to expire before they sold it all. They didn't have room for it in the fridge either.
I don't know if they use it in the Best Case kits but I doubt it.
Sent from the brew timer.

This leads us to the obvious question of where the folks in New Brunswick were able to source it. Are you able to share your source, folks?

Country Malt -North Country, shipped out Champlain, NY.
$35 to $37 US range per brick. Landed at the door, 3 bricks $280 Canadian.
Comes out to $1.62 to $1.89 per 5 gallon batch, depending on the yeast.

Thanks Steffen!
Would I be correct in assuming we'd need someone (e.g., pro Brewer or homebrew store) to have an account with them and that not just anyone can place an order?
