Brewing a Pale ale for the next Truro meeting .

Post by Ryan.RSM » Tue Mar 22, 2016 6:05 am

Alright, the last few meetings in Truro we've been talking about all brewing a pale ale to see how each of our systems an processes affect the end product. I say we hammer out a recipie and get the ball rolling if there is still interest. I'm thinking we use El-dorado hops because most of us have them on hand and I can supply anyone who may still need some. That being said, el-dorado needs something to balance them like centennial, Columbus ect. For the hop additions maybe do a 20,10,5, flameout ? Finally, the grain bill. Maybe something like 1lb Munich and some Chrystal 30 , and 8-9 lb of two row.

I'm open to any suggestions! I think this would be an interesting to compare at the next meeting!

Cheers guys.

Sounds good to me...I've been keen on doing this for awhile...unfortunately we seem to get too caught up in sampling each others beer and the serious talk gets pushed to the wayside lol. What are we thinking for abv and ibus?

I am in!!

I don't have crystal 30. I do have 40.
I need some columbus.

Hops going with a single oz each addition?

If everyone has BeerSmith, lets plug it in and distribute a copy.

Lets decide upon an abv and Ibu count and go from there. Malt bill will be different based on everyone's setup effieciency. Say 5% and 40 ibu?

Sounds great. An easy drinker Pale Ale. I have a little Columbus on hand. For the grain bill I am good with the crystal 30, 2-row and Munich.

What about yeast? I assume a standard US-05 or equivalent? How much time are we looking to do this? I still bottle condition, so I am going to need about 5 weeks, possibly 6 from start to finish. I can probably get a brew day Saturday, so I am looking about end of April?

Steve, I can share some Columbus and Crystal 30 with you

Love this idea. What's 40 ibu's? I don't comprehend a number that low??? :shitstorm: Don't think I have C30. Can we do C15 with Munich and 2 row base? Why don't we aim for OG 1.050-1.054. 1 OZ Columbus for bittering and 1 OZ El Dorado 15, 10, 5, flameout or 20 home like Ryan said. I'm open. US05 keeps it simple for everyone and just my 2 cents. Also as all of our set ups are different lets keep malts into percentages. Maybe 80 % 2 row, 16% Munich and 4 % Crystal 15 or I"ll get C30. Thoughts?

haha...fair enough. Just make sure you don't go all lazy on us and dry hop some of that cider you're brewing and try to pass it off as your APA. :pow:

That's pretty close to what I threw together Woody. Only difference is my Columbus is only 12.5 and not 17 AA

Sounds good. Let's see what the others think. With the lower ibu maybe we can dial back on my 16% Munich recommendation.

Instead of Columbus, we could use cascade. I have a lb of it in my freezer, plus I'm sure lots of us have plenty of it on hand.

Steve, I haven't started it yet, but when I did up a recipe that's what I came up with according to Derek's first or second post.

I would love to host, but I would have to kick out my family first. Let me discuss with my wife. She has already agreed to it a while ago, so let's see where that sits. When were we looking for the next meeting?
