Looking to do up another batch off cider but Boates is done till Sept apparently. Does anyone else know of a good source for cider that isn't overpriced when buying in bulk?

Try Noggins Farm - not sure if they do bulk, but they might have a source for you.

I've heard Sterlings in the valley will fill your carboy for 20 bucks or so. I know someone who has done it. Give them a call.

I recently, about a month ago, picked up some cider from Noggin's. I originally dropped off a bucket at their Seaport Market stand with my name and number attached. They said they would fill it during their next apple pressing and bring it back 1-2 Saturday's from my original (random Wednesday) drop off date. However, that date came and went...so on the second Saturday when I was at the stand inquiring about the cider, the one working there called down to their Valley location. Turns out they were pressing that day and were able to fill my bucket and set it aside. Long story short, the wife and I drove down and made a day of it and walked away with 23L of pressed juice for $28.75 ($1.25/L). Added some campden tablets, then pectic enzyme, then some lactose, nutrients, and an english cider yeast (WL545) starter. So far it tastes great - I just need to keg it and replace the hydrogen sulfide with CO2.

I have always gotten mine from Footes farm down in the valley. .80/litre last time I was there a couple of years ago so probably more expensive now. They also had unpasteurized honey.

Roll in with what you want to fill and bring cash.

Phyl and I are interested in doing cider and/or perry. I'm assuming it's the right time of year to get juice from the source. Can we get enough people on here in on it to make a drive to the valley worth the effort? I'll do the driving and pickup/delivery if others cover the gas.

I contacted a few of the places mentioned above. Stirling has yet to respond.

Boates will take your buckets from the Brewery Market again this year starting in mid September and return them the next week with either organic sweet cider or organic apple/pear cider. Last year's price was $1.10/litre.

Noggins gave me a long description of what they do, the short version of which is they can sell us cider made from any N.S. grown apples we see in grocery stores this fall. They start pressing after Thanksgiving but I was advised that the best cider is available in late November to late December because of when the best varieties are harvested and that they like to let the apples ripen in cold storage before pressing. I was advised to talk to them after Thanksgiving to get a better sense of availability and price this year, which I will do.

My conclusion is anyone who is in a hurry or wants to be certain that it will be ready for the holidays should go with Boates. If you're patient and want a higher quality product then wait for Noggins.

Stirling replied. He said "We will have pear juice available later in November. Price for pear isn't set yet. We will be pressing apple regularly, starting late September. Apple is $1.00 per litre in your container."

I was in the valley last week and stopped at Foote Family Farm for sweet cider. It was mostly from honeycrisp apples, although Mr. Foote couldn't remember what he blended it with. I got 60 litres for $60.

Three of us are fermenting 20 litres each on three different yeasts. The starting gravity was 1.054 so I decided not to add any sugar. I'll try to get some from Noggins via the local farmers' markets as well.

Wow 60.00 for 60 litres is a lot better than what Bulwark is charging for theirs.

KMcK what are you thoughts on Footes cider? I assume its unpasteurized right?

I've gone with Boates a number of times but was just looking to switch things up.

It was unpasteurized so we gave it some potassium metabisulphite right away. We fermented on three different yeasts (EC-1118 Champagne, WLP735 French White Wine Yeast, and Wyeast 3942-PC BELGIAN WHEAT). The EC-1118 went to 1.000 and cleared. Phyl dry hopped with Cascade and we're drinking it now. The WLP735 is at 1.005 and still slowly fermenting. It has enough residual sweetness that I'm tempted to stop the fermentation now rather than back sweeten later. 3942 smells like farts so we're giving it more time before tasting.

We're happy with the results so far. We had a taste comparison of two of the three batches at the meeting Tuesday night. Both were enjoyable. Come over to try some if you wish.

A few of my friends get their cider from Masons in Windsor. I believe they charge about 20 to 25 bucks a carboy.
