I'm looking to head to Home Depot or Kent for a larger diameter blowoff tube (biggest I can get at NG is 0.5"). Just wondering if I can pick something up at either of those places that will work.
My thought was that since it wont' be in contact with the beer there's little to no risk of leeching...so I was going to grab anything that's clear...but I thought I would ask first before heading.
Thx.

I use the universal bungs like this one
http://www.everwoodavebrewshop.com/prod ... rm-stp.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
the 0.5 inch tubing fits over the nub and the 1/4 inch fits nicely in the hole. I tend to use 1/4 and haven't clogged the blowoff tube yet.
If you don't want to use a bung Home Depot sells 1-inch vinyl tubing.

I use the same with 5/16" tubing - it works 99.9% of the time for me, but I have plugged that tubing, when there was lots of trub transferred to the fermenter.

Oops. It is 5/16 that I use. Same as Derek. I'm terrible with numbers.

Thanks!
I'm using the glass, wide-mouthed fermenters which take a #5.5 stopper.
I'll give the 0.5" tubing a go but I'd have to drill out the stopper I suspect...

I think I mentioned this to you when you got the fermenter from me that you can use a universal stopper upside down on the threaded opening and then jam a 5/16 tube into it for blowoff. There's a picture of it somewhere on the forums in a thread about the fermenters.

http://www.tngun.com/bung-sizes-for-brewing/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This link has the diameter of the different stopper sizes. Looks like 5.5 is 15/16 to 1 1/16 inches. So I think the 1-inch inner diameter tubing might work without a stopper since the outside diameter will be slightly larger than 1 inch.

This method works great ... and even if the 5/16" tubing gets clogged, these wide mouth fermenters with allow a bit of pressure to release if it builds up too high - I know from experience!

Here's a picture of the universal stopper option:

1/2 inch tubing from a home brew store will fit over the sipgot of a 3 piece airlock. I have used this on my SS Brew Bucket and never had blockage.
I have also drilled out a regular bung to allow me to jam 1/2 inch tubing into it. I used this for many years successfully.

Thanks Aaron, I do remember you showing me that picture.
I did that exact setup you mentioned with the upside-down bung with the tube and it's worked really well.
My last batch was very active and I was a little concerned that the tube was going to get clogged leading to an explosion leading to an irate spouse.
