Fuck it, enter anyway. As far as I know, we're all still at step number one.

Doesn't need to be all grain. If I recall correctly, last year's winner was actually an extract brew.homebrewcrew wrote:Would like to enter in just don't think im ready this year for this step. If anyone needs a hand more than willing to come out and learn to brew all grain.

Re: Garrison's 2012 Ultimate Brew-off Challenge
Correct Sean, last years, the year before and the second place in the first comp had extract in the brews.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Someone somewhere mentioned we should have a sub comp for the brewnosers. I like this idea, has any more thought been put in it? It might take some of the pressure off of people who are worried about entering the Garrison comp. 1 beer two comps.

Re: Garrison's 2012 Ultimate Brew-off Challenge
Good opportunity for the people interested in BJCP if we had our own 'best of club' comp. Maybe I'll start a new thread later. But seriously, enter the competition. Just fucking do it. Nothing bad will happen. My witbier sucked, and I'm only slightly bitter about it now, 2 years later, lol.

I don't know why there isn't or hasn't always been a best of comp, sounds awesome. Fuck BJCP. Up GABF

Re: Garrison's 2012 Ultimate Brew-off Challenge
I was going to send Chalmers with this idea tonight but I was thinking of Iron Brewer style competition. 8 entries 4 times a year and the top 2 of each bracket compete and get judged by the brewnosers at the spring thaw event. All 32 entrants would be different either 1 person or teams of up to 3 so everyone gets a shot. Each of the 4 times we come up with an ingredient (s) and the brewers selected (random draw) can brew whatever style or non style they want as long as it has that ingredients(s). X it was your idea of brewing with corn flakes and a recent thread on HBT of brewing with reese coco puffs that spawned this idea. Let me know what you think.

Sounds like a good plan too. Something to mix it up!

I'm up for any kind of competition. We might be able to scheme up a prize or two as well. But for now, I think the rye IPA is quick and easy for everyone.

Be warned, rye can cause a really slow runoff. If you have rice hulls, this might be the time to use them.

Re: Garrison's 2012 Ultimate Brew-off Challenge
We experienced this last Saturday... Forgot to add rice hulls until we were about 2/3 through the dough-in. Likely didn't add enough and had to fuck around with a stuck mash. What a pain in the ass.mr x wrote:Be warned, rye can cause a really slow runoff. If you have rice hulls, this might be the time to use them.

It's not so bad if you've got time and a few buddies around having a beer. It's less than optimal when you are alone with CBC Radio One's debate on Zionism...

Ours didn't get stuck but the flow dropped so much it might as well have. But we had pizza and beer to get us through it, although I think my feet froze solid at one pointmr x wrote:It's not so bad if you've got time and a few buddies around having a beer. I don't think my body completely thawed until sometime yesterday. Lesson learned for next time around though: a bottle of Scotch would definitely come in handy.mgc wrote:Ours didn't get stuck but the flow dropped so much it might as well have. Snapped this (still flat) while bottling.

Nice looking brews boys
