got my score sheets in the mail today, the issues that were raised with my beers were exactly what i had suspected. three out of the six score sheets mentioned slight astringency - mighta been from the grapefruit peel in my citrus one, but no such easy culprit for my porter. anyway, it's good to have written, impartial opinions!
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Ha, I got mine back and on one entry for the Schwarzbier one judge scored me a 15 and the other two a 37 each. I always thought the score
was to be within 5 points of each other. This is the first time I had such a difference in score. They all drank from the same bottle.

Got ours back as well yesterday. Most of our scores were within 5 points of one another. Brown averaged 42/50. Irish Red averaged 38/50 and our IPA was around 34/50. We got some great feedback to build on for next time.

Got my scores when I got home. 38, 39 and a 36 for my stout. My only complaint is that they didn't give me any comments for improvement, but I was generally happy with the beer/results.

you should demand complete comments on "overall impression", they didn't put that field on the review to be left blank ( unless he was tanked when he marked your beer that is)

You never know what some judges will write down... or where they get some of the judges. I once had a judge comment that, "There is an off-flavor in the flavor". Phew, thanks for the advice! It's all coming together now!

Ha ha, I once had a judge ask me on a note slipped into my return sheet, how did I get my entry ( Light American Lager ) so light.

All in all, though, it's still helpful to get feedback from experienced judges. The only way to get experience is by judging in events
and it do take time to gain the experience.

The comment I got about my Irish Red this year was, "There is a smokey off-flavour in the finish." Guess he didn't bother to read the recipe.....I added peat smoked malt.

Yeah, I agree completely. It's just a bit frustrating sometimes when you get back three sheets for one beer, and two or all three have hardly any comments other than "nice", "to style", "off-flavor"... it's hard to improve on your beer when even the judges can't tell you what's wrong or not with it.

Yeah, that's more what I was thinking. I understand one or two might be "training" but to have all three useless is just annoying. Although they did comment it might need more roast, but I doubt that very much. I'll probably brew it exactly the same and try again in different comps, I thought it was a strong contender.

That doesn't seem so strange, I would expect smoky flavours in an Irish Red to be considered "off". It certainly isn't part of the BJCP style guide. I'm not sure they do get to read the recipe, anyway. It makes for certain expectations: if you know there's peat smoked malt in there, you're way more likely to taste it than if you don't know.

Smoked beers or those perceived to be smoked should go into section 22 not into section 9 anyway.
I'm sure judges don't get to see the recipe beforehand unless it is section 23 in which you have to explain what you were trying to brew and the base recipe you were using if any.

That's not quite true. 9E (Strong Scotch Ale) allows:
Aroma: ... Peaty, earthy and/or smoky secondary aromas may also be present,...
and
Flavor: ... Hints of roasted malt or smoky
flavor may be present, ...
but that still isn't an Irish Red :)
