The westmalle dubbel was delicious, my favorite of the bunch. I saved some dregs from the Orval.

that truly is a great beer! I got my recipe all figured out now I just have to commit to some brew time

It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? Kyle, is there an information/entry sheet we will be required to fill out?

Brian, no we are trying to keep this pretty simple. By signing up your name is on an entrants sheet, when you submit your 4 or more bottles with your name on them we simply record that you have made your submission. So when you come to Gahan simply state your name and hand your product over to the bartender.

I am requiring your name and ABV on bottles, other than that we are judging these without knowing FG, ingredients, IBU, etc

Just tapped one of my attempts. I went with both wyeast 1214 for one and white labs for the other. This is the 530.

I haven't kegged the 1214 yet since I accidentally chilled that one right during the growth phase and ended up with a pile of acetydehyde that has all but completely faded. Overall the 530 was amazing but I love the westmalle brews anyway. I was worried that the beer would have no body at 1.004 FG but that's the beauty of Belgian ales... once carbonated it was full and the yeast puts out this beautiful spice.

My plan is to try a blend of the two beers of the other one comes around but I can't see the 1214 getting anywhere near the 530

I really could have used those 2 weeks to help condition out some sulfur I had in my beer, I didn't end up entering because of it but I may have knowing there was extra time in the bottle for conditioning. O well, best of luck to all who entered.

Hi Everyone,

This post is to announce the winner and runner up of the home-brew comp.

First of all I would like to thank everyone who entered. This was an awesome showing, and a testament to the strength of our home brewing community. This competition will return next year, and we will make some improvements and try and grow this as best as possible. If any of you have any suggestions on how we should move forward I would appreciate the feedback.

ALL ENTRANTS WILL RECIEVE FEEDBACK ON THEIR SUBMISSION VIA EMAIL. IT WILL BE FROM MY PERSONAL EMAIL. THIS WILL BE SENT OUT BY THE END OF THE WEEK.

Congratulations to Ian Wheatley!!! Your Trappist Single is the winner of this years home brewing competition. This beer was exceptional. The yeast and hop profile was very pleasant, it hit all the vital stats, it was well carbonated and free of off flavours. Ian and I will be in touch, he will receive a free meal at Gahan House when he chooses, and we will brew his recipe here on the 5 BBL system.

I would also like to congratulate Justin Clarke, this year's runner up.

Thank you again for your participation.
