I don't see anything in the rules this year about the winner having to save a bunch to serve at the gala. Did they stop doing that? I thought it was a dumb idea anyway, because I always end up drinking most of it beforehand, which would disqualify me.

"Awards will be handed out during the Gala on Thursday, March 22nd, 2018 at 7pm at Garrison’s
Seaport Hall and finalists are asked to bring a quantity of their beer for attendees to sample."

http://www.garrisonbrewing.com/wp-conte ... -Sheet.pdf

Looks like it's not required but requested. I think it's a nice idea to have people bring /some/ of their brew to let other brewers give it a go

I'd suggest reading this book - https://www.amazon.ca/Kolsch-History-Br ... 937381586/
I read the book over the holidays, thanks for the recommendation, very interesting

With all this talk about Kölsch, people may start to be interested in these:

This wasn’t an easy beer to make, it took me 4 batches to get it right. I lost one due to contaminated equipment.

I worked on a recipe using tettnang and the white labs kolsch yeast for a couple batches until the very last one where I switched it to the Hallertau and wyeast version.

I also changed up my ferment profile for the last one, I thought that if the quick lager method works for my Doppelbock then why not try something similar on the kolsch. The first few batches I just sat it at 14-16c for the duration and ramped up however with this one I began at 15c and after 50% attenuation began to ramp up.

Made a huge difference

Another interest bit is that I did a split batch with one and did a kolsch yeast in 5 gallons and a London ESB in the other 5. You can barely tell the difference.

Not super impressed with the clarity on this. I bottled 6...but I'm going to gel tonight and rebottle 6 more Sunday night...hoping it helps

I’m doing the exact same thing. If you used the wyeast kolsch you might be screwed. It’s notorious for not clearing even after finings. I was gonna filter but the beer was so good I didn’t wanna screw with it.

We’ll see what tomorrow brings

Guess we’ll have to wait on he latest accb update to see if that’s true.
Or maybe someone at the brewery simply messed up on the date.

Yeah, so, uh...

We just checked and Garrison gave us the correct date of Thursday, March 29th. And we managed to type the day before. :o

I know, I know, we should all be fired. But then where you gonna get your (slightly incorrect) beer news, huh?!

(We've fixed the post. And we'll put the correct date (and a mea culpa) in this week's post as well.)

Don't feel too bad, Garrison's own website still says it's on the 22nd haha http://www.garrisonbrewing.com/community/#home-brew-off

I had the same experience with wyeast 2565 back with a kolsch in the summer, this most recent recipe I went with WLP029 as people reported it flocculating a little better and I did notice the same thing.

Yeah I used wlp029...
Good luck everyone...I've never had a "true" Kolsch before...so I have no idea if it tastes like a Kolsch (other than using the style guidelines).

I tried Off Track’s and Norths and mine was in line with those. With the 4 batches I did it was very obvious when it missed the mark. But we shall see.
