Great write up Tim. If they give you a heads-up when the beer is ready, let us know. My folks live in the Ottawa Valley and I'm planning a visit around Thanksgiving - I'd have to drive right by Vankleek Hill. If the beer is ready & I actually go, I could mule some back to the maritimes.

Great write-up Tim. Well Toronto Beer Week starts Sept 14 so perhaps it'll be ready when I go on Sunday. I'll drop the Brewnosers name and see if that gets me any favours!

It seems that breweries are usually giving away (or paying others to take away) the spent grain, so that's impressive that they've got farmers paying for it. I wonder what the old yeast would be used for? Marmite for the pigs?
Decades back (I think it would have been 1978) Seagram's in Waterloo was feeding the spent grain to cattle - and it was considered very high quality feed - but I think the problem has always been that it's uneconomic. For most farmers, if they got it free it would probably cost them more to make a special trip to get it than to get their feed from the local feed store. otoh, if your source isn't too far from farming country, and you don't have a lot to unload (a micro-brewery's waste would be tiny compared to a national distillery), maybe it can be profitable for both the farmer and brewer.

Where my mother lives is "feed lot farming". Cattle come in from out west and lose a lot of weight on the trip. They fatten them up again before slaughter. That would be prime country for a brewery to find a market for its spent grain.

I'll take the Marmite...

Wow, Tim. Great report.
A dream come true to actually brew one of your creations on a commercial scale.

Cheers

Great write up. Thanks for sharing. +1 on letting us know when it's released. I know a few people in van-sleezy and I am in Ottawa now on a regular basis.

Our plans changed and unfortunately we're not gonna make it to Beaus. The almost 3hrs of driving time couldn't be justified!

VANKLEEK HILL, ON – Beau’s All Natural Brewing has announced the release of two new limited edition beers, one brewed in collaboration with a noted beer writer, and the other created with an award winning homebrewer.

The first of the pair is Staghorn, a Belgian-style ale brewed using sumac. Co-created by Jordan St. John, beer columnist for Sun Media. Staghorn is part of the brewery’s Wild Oats Series of one-off beers, and is described as follows:

This Belgian Golden Ale was brewed with pilsner and wheat malts, Belgian Cascade hops, agave nectar, and hand-picked Eastern Ontario staghorn sumac berries. Mingled aromas of spicy cloves and white grapefruit are forward, with flavours of bubblegum and more grapefruit, as well as tart lemon courtesy of the sumac berries. The body is crisp, highly carbonated, and finishes dry.

The other new brew is Doc’s Feet Dubbel, an addition to the Beau’s Pro-Am Series of beers created in collaboration with homebrewers. Developed by Tim Gregory, winner of the 2011 Toronto Beer Week Homebrew Contest, Doc’s Feet has the following description:

Complex, pronounced fruitiness and malt character are present in this Belgian-style brown ale, along with spicy notes and alcohol warmth. Doc (Tim’s cat) – approved!
Both beers were debuted last week during Toronto Beer Week 2012, and are available now in bottles at the brewery and on tap at select locations in Southern Ontario.

I hopefully will have a bottle in hand in a few weeks. One of the Girls in our lab parents live in Vankleek Hill and her parents might bring a bottle with them on thanksgiving.

I've also asked some Ottawa people to grab a couple cases for me if they make the trip down to the brewery, but so far no one is headed that way. If they do, I will import them and distribute bottles to the club in December?January when I make the drive.

Thanks! That would be great. Looks like the brewery is gonna send a few bottles out, but it probably won't be a whole lot. AKR71 is hoping to be up that way soon too, and said he could probably grab some.

So hopefully we'll all get a taste or two, and I'll have a few trophies. :spilly:

Once I finalize my plans & figure out how much $$ I can spare on beer, I'll try and start a spreadsheet. Was planning for Thanksgiving, but now its looking like it might be later.

I have an empty Beau's ceramic flip top bottle. Perhaps Tim could just brew another batch and fill it for me.
