Hot damn! Y'all are way fancier than me.

I had planned to just swap my blow off tube for a clean airlock before I put it in the fridge.

You'll get significant suck back through the airlock when the temp drops. I just bought a Mylar balloon from dollarama and attached a piece of tubing to it. When I go to cold crash I fill the balloon with CO2 and swap out my airlock for the balloon.
On tap: APA, Dubbel, Dark Mild
Fermenting: Brett Saison 2022, Schwarzbier, APA, Sour Brown,
Coming up: American Wheat (Fruited), Vienna Lager, Dortmunder
Bottled: Brett Saison 2020, Brett Saison 2021, Baltic Porter

Huh. I never knew that happened. I've never noticed any suck back before when I cold crashed other beers before and there was still the sanitizer in the airlock - I guess it just sucked the air from the fridge through the airlock? I guess I didn't really think it could work in reverse (or why it would?). Very interesting. Thanks for the intel.

More Q's

Is there any easy way to tell if a baloon is Mylar? Are those the shiny/silvery ones

Would a sodastream work for the CO2 for filling it? I don't have a keg or compressor

Is there any worry about the smell of the balloon getting in there or will sanitizing take care of that?

Thanks again for the help.

My setup - 30L sanke using a TC x Ball Lock post with a spunding valve as an airlock. Have been using tc sample valves for transferring out but I recently acquired an old butterfly valve which lets me swap between a sample valve and a 1/4" barb x TC fitting I have hooked up to a liquid disconnect for pressurized transfers.

Only ran a couple of clean beers through them and so far pretty happy with the ease of use. Next step is probably a 4" TC opening to replace the standard opening to make cleaning and getting dry hop bags out easier.

is the cold crash to help reduce hop particles in the beer / "hop burn". A NEIPA doesn't need the clarity of a cold crash

I think that's the primary use, especially if you're dryhopping with loose pellets. I didn't cold crash mine but it seems like with the amount I dryhopped and having them in bags it seems to have avoided any hop burn. Just crossing my fingers it holds up okay in the keg, my limited experience with brewing IPAs has mostly ended in beers that taste good for 2 or 3 weeks then take a hard nosedive.

Yeah I had an obscene (read: unnecessary) amount of dry hop with loose pellets... cold crash made it all sink to the bottom. Still plenty hazy too, thanks to the yeast. Best smelling beer I've made so far, hands down.

As Jeff mentioned, I'm only cold crashing to drop out the large hop particulate. Makes the transfer to keg a lot cleaner and allows you not drink hop floaties for the first few pints out of the keg!

Anyone know if Noble Grape is still a drop off option or is it the brewery only?

The email from Diana says either the seaport or oxford locations.
I just wrote them looking for the registration form because in that email the link is coming up as the style guideline sheet.

The woman at the brewery said yesterday that they had a lot of entries this year compared to last. I wouldn't want to be a judge for this comp!
