oh oh, I think it was deleted by me by mistake. I deleted the shadow topic, and the real thread went with it. I'm not sure what happened, but I won't try to do that again. Sorry....Fuck

Final judging table. This pic was on my desktop. I think Chalmers took it.

And I had a whole response written out, that was deleted when I hit submit.
Gimme a minute to write it again.

Re: 1st Annual Big Spruce Homebrew Contest
The winning entrant was Tim Gregory, with his Dirty Grain IPA (I'm sure there's a story there!)
Second place was Bryan & Andrew (collab brew). Third was a tie between Derek S. and Brian H.
The judging went as follows: three tables, each with three judges. Each table judged six beer, and the top one (or two, if they were passionate about advancing two) were picked for the Best of Show. These four finalists were then judged by all nine judges, and a winner chosen. The debate was heated and passionate, to say the least. The second and third places were chosen based on scores from the first round, as it was proving too difficult to choose between them. No judges knew the identity of any brewer until the results were decided.
Thank you to all of the brewers who entered, the judges who gave up their time, and Big Spruce for sponsoring/hosting the competition.
I have scoresheets and tshirts for everyone who dropped their beer with me. I'm in town this week, and can meet up any evening (except Monday). Please EMAIL me to set up a date.
Sorry about the confusion about who/when/where the results would be announced. I had stated they'd be released here when we had them, I should have said, "When I have a chance to organize them". (and I don't yet control what other people post or see on the internet).
If anyone has any questions or concerns about how the competition was run, please EMAIL me, as I missed all of the action on the other thread until this morning as I was sitting down to tabulate results. And I'm about to log out again to do other things. I will try to respond to your concerns promptly.

What was involved in getting the commercial establishment, legal wise? Or was this a don't ask don't tell deal.

Re: 1st Annual Big Spruce Homebrew Contest
Looks like a well run competition. Thanks Chris, Big Spruce and the judges, and I'm sorry I had doubts.
Might comment though, it might be an idea to announce 1st, 2nd and 3rd place simultaneously if at all possible, in these sort of competitions. I believe just the winner was posted on Facebook.

Thanks again for a great 1st year of participation. Every beer was really great, and I know I speak on behalf of all the judges when I say that we really enjoyed sampling them all.
Tim Gregory was our winner with his Dirty Grain IPA. We will be contacting him about brewing his beer at Big Spruce.
First runner up was a beer brewed by Bryan MacDonald and Andrew Morrow out of Sydney, NS with their Four Seas IPA.
Second runners up (there was a tie) were Derek Stapleton of Lower Sackville with Citrus Sunrise IPA and Brian Harvey of Halifax with his Cape Breton Liberation Army IPA.

I ran my entry by Nash before the competition. He said it needed to be “more hop forward” and I took that as meaning dry hopped. Mine was all FWH and late. Where the beers in the final four all dry hopped please?

Mine was dry hopped, but not super-excessively. I think about 2.5oz.

Re: 1st Annual Big Spruce Homebrew Contest
I dry hopped mine 3 separate times about 6oz in total
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I picked up my score sheets last night. Hats off to the judges for some great comments and feedback. While I haven't entered, many competitions, these are by far the best filled out / most informative sheets I have received. Well done judges!
