Jason's win was well-deserved! Fantastic weizen. And he seems like good people too so rock on! :rockin:

Great to meet some more new (to us) Brewnosers, and re-meet others.

:cheers2:

Redoubt, Question ...Apart from fermenting a few Festas, was that the first or the second brew you ever did? BIAB right? what was your secret? I know you did a lot of research, with questions on this site and elsewhere.

Very well done! :rockin:

Scored pretty well...found out that my 60 min boils with pilsen malt just isn't enuf.
Slight dms picked up by 2 of the judges...i normally do 90 min boils...i boiled this wide open, and cooled fairly quickly...oh well back to 90 min boils when I use pilsen

I averaged around 25. Biggest thing I was out of style. I was dark for the style, and I shouldn't have added the 22 minute hop addition. I discovered these myself, but was great to get the feed back. Definately room for improvement haha.

I averaged 34...the biggest take away was the dms.

I would be interested to hear the scores from some people in the top four.

I don't have my sheets back but I late hopped mine only and used galaxy, trying to stand out from the crowd ...say no more ;)

Great event last night. I don't get out to the meetings enough so it was good to see a lot of new and familiar faces. Titus' beard threw me a bit. Grizzly!

Quality of feedback from my entry this year is light years ahead of previous years thanks to the BJCP judges. I averaged 39 and most of my comments were that carbonation was too low.

Sometimes standing out from the crowd by being out-of-style isn't what you want, unfortunately, but you already know that.

First round: I can tell you to advance to the second round, scores were all in the high thirties (some did crack forty). The main purpose of this round was for honest feedback and putting forth the best beers at the tables. A 38 at one table might have advanced, while at another it would not have. This is because it was judged against the other beers those same judges tasted, with the attitude, "Is this a very good Weizen, and does it have a very good chance of winning?" 13 advanced

Second round: no scores given, only notes, I do not know much about this round. 4 advanced

Final Four: I was told the scores in the Final Four round were all a bit lower (mid- to high-thirties) than in the first round, focussing more on parsing out the small differences between beers and specifically mentioning the highlights and flaws the beers may have.

Good to meet some new brewnosers, had a great time. Congrats to all the winners :rockin:
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Average score 31
“very easy drinking ale with some weizen character but too much hop character for the style. I think with less hops this beer would do very well.”

“I would drink this all night but not to style for this comp. Great job otherwise”

“Nice beer (weizen pale ale) hops are overwhelming and inappropriate for style. I’ll drink this one”

“Great beer. Not a Weizen. Some weizen character. But hops dominate – enjoyed drinking this.
I’ll try to behave next time …always was a bit of a rebel

Really good score sheets/feedback. Nice and friendly too. Thanks very much judges.

This is the 5th brew we've done.

Yes, BIAB.

Secret? *shrugs* Tried a few new things with this. Step mash. Used gyle (unfermented wort) instead of priming sugar. First one-stage fermentation as well (all in a carboy).
GuingesRock wrote:I would be interested to hear the scores from some people in the top four.
Average from the first round was 40.

Also, just wanted to say a big thank-you to the judges. You guys clearly put a lot of effort into giving helpful comments, and it is much appreciated!

I wonder if the winner used a decoction mash and whether Garrison can do a decoction on their system? I'd think you would need quite a good sludge pump to pull a decoction from the mash and pump it back from the kettle.

Decoction is for chumps, melanoidan is where it's at. :-):-) :-)

From my personal experience, decoction is for people who hate themselves! There are some home experiments that indicate it's not just about flavour though. They observed you can get better head retention. however, I'd not let my beer sit for 7 mins without taking a drink, so not a real life scenario in my house. :spilly:

Found it at this link for anyone interested: http://518124.cache1.evolutionhosting.c ... ransen.pdf

FYI Brewnoser, when I was talking to you at Garrisons I meant that I used the Classic Style Series book by Eric Warner, not Gregory Noonan. I have a bad memory.
