Hats off to RT for offering and arranging to send other BNers entries with his. It pushed me to enter when I was dithering about it. Dropped mine off last night and had some tasty beers and great brewing conversation.
Good luck to everyone who entered.

Re: [Competition Open] ALES 2014
Thanks a lot for the help packing, John!
I brought it to FedEx first thing thing morning, here's the tracking link: https://www.fedex.com/fedextrack/index. ... ca_english" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's annoying that it stayed local all day, lol. It's going by air though and my bet is it will arrive on Tuesday.
BTW guys it worked out to about $9 per entry for shipping.
Now we wait. Then we wait some more. Then we sit on the edge of out seats and wait some more! You can follow ALES on Facebook for updates on the competition: https://www.facebook.com/ALESClub" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For the best named beer that scores 30 points or more, the fermentor from OBK. The beer doesn't even need to place (I expect Patrick might have picked or come up with that category since it's his donation).
Seems like a fun sort of competition.

It is indeed a Sponsored special. We like to spice things up, find it more rewarding then trying to copy someone else.GuingesRock wrote:For the best named beer that scores 30 points or more, the fermentor from OBK. We did however pony up and provide prizing for all the other major winners. We committed to four 20G Blichmann Boilmakers in addition. We pick and choose the events we can endorse. When we do get behind them like to make sure not just trinkets. Shaping up to be a very good year for ALES even after the bad news from AHA last year.
Cheers,
Patrick.

9$ per entry is really good.
I was a bit slow to get my entries out and had to ship two-day fedex and it was 53$ for three entries!
I'm definitely looking forward to some feedback.

I also sponsored the IPA category, $250 in prizes from the store (prizes and gift cards) for the winners of that category. I suspect that some of the BN group is in there too.
Good Luck!

Wow. Much respect. Look at the size of this competition for a Canadian venue. Huge strides here for the scene.
Congratulations to the Ale and Lager Enthusiasts of Saskatchewan homebrewing club. Their annual competiton attracted 675 entries from across Canada making this the biggest home brewing competition in recent memory! Perhaps the $12,000 in prizes generated some addition interest this year, eh? You have once again proven why you are the number one ranked club in the entire country! Good on you!

I always keep my head up Rob. We really need a Brewnosers competition.
Ps. Went to Stillwell's yesterday for the first time, and the beer at RB is better than anything they have, Derek agreed. and the burgers are crap in comparison. I guess it's trendy there though. I hate trendy. That's my two cents

I agree, the beer at Rockbottom is better, but it's going to be hard to find beer that's better than Nash's.
Myself, I really like the burgers at Stillwell, however, the ones at Rockbottom have been coming around lately.

I agree with Jimmy on the Stillwell burger - they are simple, and fresh and I enjoy them. RB's burgers are also really good, just much bigger and with different flavors than Stillwell's.Jimmy wrote:I agree, the beer at Rockbottom is better, but it's going to be hard to find beer that's better than Nash's.

My submission certainly wasn't my best brew. Pretty much all I had available to send out, so I was looking for feedback with the off chance of "getting lucky".RubberToe wrote:Fucking shut out, damnit! So much for my fantasy of winning best of show.

Re: [Competition Open] ALES 2014
Excellent, TY.
I am more interested in the feedback from these than any chance of winning at this point! My scoresheets from the yeast wranglers comp definitely told me a lot. I am hoping to re brew the same recipe i submitted for my ordinary bitter with the feedback and see if i can bump it up from an average of 39 to something in the winning range!

That score's nothing to shake a stick at and could be enough to win gold depending on the day and the category.mcgster wrote:Excellent, TY.

This competition was stacked though, many, many entries and difficult to medal.
The feedback should prove worthwhile. We should have it in a few weeks I bet.

Also a reason why I think people shouldn't hold back on entering a brew because they don't think it's great. Sometimes you get a pleasant surprise.dean2k wrote:My submission certainly wasn't my best brew. The results aren't all there yet. None of the categories I entered are there (APA, American wheat beer, weizen, American IPA) https://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/SearchR ... sp?Cat=157" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: [Competition Open] ALES 2014
Thanks! Needless to say they all didn't score so well but i did get great feedback on all of them. In the case of the ordinary bitter two of the three judges suggested a slightly higher fermentation temp to bring out some more esters and one judge suggested maybe just a nose more hops. I think i'll keep the hop profile the same and just modify the ferment temp.RubberToe wrote:mcgster wrote:Excellent, TY.

BUT… the batch was a 10 gallon batch and i had split it and used two different yeasts. I didn't know i wasn't allowed to send two of the same subcategory so i sent the 1178 ringwood batch to Yeast Wranglers and the 1768 ESB strain to this one. I'm really curious to see if the judges have different comments. Personally i prefer the 1178.
