I was not planning on entering this year but I got an idea today and I might have to try a one-gallon batch...

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
Somebody should do a very sour IPA. Had a few from the Sur APA series from To Øl, and they were fantastic. A heavily hopped sour ale with just Amarillo was fantastic.
Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I would agree, except I was told they are expecting additions to an American IPA, and a sour one would be out of style.gm- wrote:Somebody should do a very sour IPA. Had a few from the Sur APA series from To Øl, and they were fantastic. A heavily hopped sour ale with just Amarillo was fantastic.
The style they've chosen isn't as open as the name may suggest.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
For some more guidance, this is from Garrison's website:
Belgian IPA
Black IPA
Brown IPA
Red IPA
Rye IPA
White IPA
Entries are due Feb 11th. This should be quite an interesting one to judge!
So, no specialty IPAs. From the 2015 BJCP guidelines, specialty IPA includes the following:The 2016 style is Experimental American IPA, the American IPA character should come through in aroma and flavour; however there should be an experimental aspect use of herbs, teas, etc. It should not be a speciality IPA.
Belgian IPA
Black IPA
Brown IPA
Red IPA
Rye IPA
White IPA

I thought they were going with the 2015 guidelines?chalmers wrote:I would agree, except I was told they are expecting additions to an American IPA, and a sour one would be out of style.gm- wrote:Somebody should do a very sour IPA. Isn't sour mashing an alternative process?Specialty - Type Beers involve some form of transformation of either a Classic Style or another base beer, either though adding additional ingredients, or handling the beer differently using an alternative process.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
To me a sour IPA sounds like it could fit (and I'd be super interested to try it) as long as it didn't totally strip out the malt character? But it sounds like maybe they're being super narrow with what hey want: an American IPA with something added. Which would be much less interesting imo
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I stand corrected. I re-read an email exchange I had with Titus when I asked about yeast selection, and he said as long as it didn't end up like a Belgian IPA or White IPA, it's fine.
Carry on!

Really? A brett IPA or a sour IPA would be fair game? Somehow I find it hard to believe that they would go for that on their system.chalmers wrote:I stand corrected. Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
Wondering if use of fruit or spice/herbs is allowed? Or would that make it a cat.20/21?
Is the "experimentation" limited to hops, malts, yeast, process etc.??
Thanks!

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp - Due Feb 11, 2016
They've (recently?) updated the Brew-Off page: http://www.garrisonbrewing.com/show/home-brew-off/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Check the links at the bottom for information and registration forms.
"The 2016 style is Experimental American IPA, the American IPA character should come through in aroma and flavour; however there should be an experimental aspect use of herbs, teas, etc. It should not be a speciality IPA."
"Beers judged according to BJCP Style Guidelines of an American IPA 21A with an Experimental feature (i.e. herbs, fruit, tea etc.). The American IPA character should come through in aroma and flavour."
Fruit and herbs are mentioned specifically, so you're in the clear.
Don't forget, these beers are due Feb 11, two months from today!! $15 is a great deal for the feedback, growlito and fill, plus drinks all evening at the gala, so there's no good excuse not to enter.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I think ingredients is the key. I'm not sure I'll be able to brew for this comp. Erin's heading to Manila for 2 months. Time will tell but will be a small stove top biab batch.jacinthebox wrote:I forgot we need to send 6 bottles to this lol...so much beer

I emailed Justin at Garrison. ..waiting to hear back
update from Garrison
"As long as it is experimental, something very different/innovative, which can include process and/or ingredients. You have to justify how it is experiment in that section on you registration form."

Anyone know where we drop off our submission? Maybe I need more coffee, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
In years past, it could be dropped at any Noble Grape (yes, even the one in Fredericton), or at Garrison. I trust that's the same this year.josherArmstrong wrote:Anyone know where we drop off our submission? Maybe I need more coffee, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
From an email from Garrison late last week:
We are getting down to the wire now with the 2016 Garrison Home Brew-Off! Just a reminder that the deadline for entry is February 11th at either Noble Grape or at Garrison Brewery!
I can’t wait to get the judging started and to see all the awesome brewing talent that we have in our region.
If you have any questions drop me a line.
Cheers,
Justin

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I know this is an ongoing discussion but would a different malt bill than a 21A American IPA be considered "experimental" and simply mentioned in the registration form? Or does the base beer need to strictly follow the BJCP standards for the malt bill ?

The initial round is on the 20th. The final four usually happens on the day of the gala.

Nope - we were supposed to put 1-2 forward and I think there were 5 tables.
