Big Spruce Home Brew Comp 2014 - 6D American Wheat or Rye
Big Spruce has announced the second annual Home Brew Competition, open to any and all NS homebrewers.
This year's style is 6D - American Wheat or Rye.
The competition is open now, beers are due November 24th (either at the brewery, or at the Halifax droppoint). The judging will take place that weekend.
All of the judging will be done by BJCP-certified judges. We'll have three tables of judges, each judging a third of the entries. Each table will put forward a favourite beer or two to the Best-of-Show, where BOS judges will pick the best 6D entry. BOS judges will be a subset of the judging panel, probably 5 judges.
The winning brewer will be invited to brew their beer at Big Spruce, for launching at the Local Connection Craft Beer and Local Food Event January 15th, 2015, and wide release thereafter. Our own TimGr won this competition last year with his "Tim's Dirty (Grain) IPA"
I don't know the finer details, but here is what I'm guessing based on last year:
One entry per person
$25 per entry (will get you an exclusive t-shirt)
Registration in advance (mainly to confirm shirt size)
Four bottles of beer are required
First and Second Runners-Up will be announced, and win some schwag.
Now, get brewing!
(Judges, expect an email from me shortly )

I'm guessing the NS thing is cause if you win, they want to brew your recipe. But it does seem a bit stricter than it needs to be.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Well, technically, you'd be an NS homebrewer. If you're a professional brewer who lives in Sackville NB, but works in Amherst NS, would the beer be eligible for an NS only comp (if they actually had an NS only commerical comp).Keith wrote:NS home brewer or brewed in NS Jimmy?

What about us free-men-on-the-land? I claim no home.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

I'm in this year. I had a feeling it would be short notice again. Luckily I can brew this weekend to get it ready in time. Not exactly a style I would otherwise be brewing in mid October but what the hell. Who wants wheat beer stocking stuffers????

I just got a silver for an American Wheat. I wonder if I am allowed to enter this year after last year's rant.

It was my first comp. I was full of excitement and anticipation, waited for the results all weekend, was sure my beer should do well, I'd made 3 batches and picked the best one, disappointment when only the winner was announced and no second and third, decided to drink the beer myself instead, posted about my disappointment, was baited by some, some tried to calm me down, It was a classic.Keith wrote:Post the rant and I'll let you know.GuingesRock wrote: I just got a silver for an American Wheat. It ended up being a good experience. I discovered from the score sheets that I got 1/3 of a point less than the third place winner, which was encouraging, plus all the judges said they really liked my beer. I'd recommend this comp for any first timers. Lots of good feedback from all the judges.

So you don't need to relive those horrible memories, I'd recommend you sitting this one out.

GRock, you are of course welcome to enter, and as you and amartin both had great showings lately for your wheat beers, I hope you will!
Your timeline is slightly different from what I remember, however. But let's leave that in the past.
