Beer Thief Homebrew Competition (Newfoundland)

Hey, um, hi!

As some of you might have heard, we are organizing a little mini-homebrew competition in Newfoundland in association with the Beer Thief special order beer club. It's a small competition for American IPAs and Dry Stouts, but I think it's one of the first homebrew competitions in Newfoundland. I'm posting here in case there are any Newfoundland homebrewers here who are not plugged into the Beer Thief stuff and might want to enter something (sorry for not posting sooner). We are accepting mail-in submissions (for the rest of 'ya) but, again, it's just a small competition to try to get the idea off the ground in Newfoundland.

If you're interested the full release is here and there is a discussion over on the Beer Thief forms here: http://www.beerthief.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=685" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Announcing the first Beer Thief Homebrew Completion

After several long discussions on the Beer Thief homebrew forum, we are happy to announce the first in what will hopefully be a growing series of mini-hombrew competitions. More details, including the entry form and drop off location for competitors will be announced soon, but for now here are some of the key requirements for competitors to get brewing.

The competition will be judged using the BJCP style guidelines and competitors will receive completed score sheets with detailed feedback for each of their entries. For this first mini-competition we will be accepting only two styles of beer: 13A. Dry Stout and 14B. American IPA.

The deadline for entries will be mid-December (tentatively December 15th) and beer will need to be dropped off or mailed to a TBA location in St. John’s. Now is the right time to start brewing these beers!

You may enter up to two beers in each category. There will be a $5 entry fee per entry to allow for us to award a winner in each category (as well as to cover the costs of returning the BJCP score sheets by mail).

Two bottles are required for each entry. Bottles must be standard 284-355 ml glass beer bottles or 500 ml PET bottles without any identifying marks or labels. Any labeling on bottle caps must be blacked out. Any bottles with embossed lettering or brand will be disqualified.

Entries must have their entry form (to be released later this month) attached to each of the two bottles for the entry using a rubber band.

More technical things:
1. Beer must be brewed at home or at a commercial brew-on-premise establishment, beer prepared at brewpubs or on commercial pilot systems is not allowed.
2. Commercially prepared extract is allowed as an ingredient and, as we hope to encourage as many entries in this first competition as possible, “hacks” (additional hop/spice additions or other yeast strain choices) of homebrew kits will also be allowed.
3. There are no restrictions against “clone” recipes as brewer’s skill and equipment differ.
4. Each entry must be submitted as one of the two beer classes in this competition. Entries which do not conform to style guidelines will likely not score highly, however, the choice of which beer to enter is entirely at your discretion. For example, an English IPA could be entered in the American IPA category and, while it may score low for the category, the score sheet still may provide useful notes.

More information, including the firm deadline date, the location to deliver entries, and the entry form, will follow in the next few weeks.

We look forward to your entries! If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail Chris at groulxsome [at] gmail.com or Mike at (your email).
Official rules and entry form should be out next week.

Thanks!

Is this comp. just for Newfoundland, or does it include other Atlantic provinces?

Thanks

I mean, it's open to anyone who wants to get beer in, honestly. I don't expect many folks will want to ship beer to Newfoundland for a fledgling comp, but they are certainly welcome to do so. We will be posting the full information on Monday or Tuesday which will include a mailing address. We kinda figured the short notice would turn some people off, but it is by no means a regionally exclusive competition. The main goal was to have a local option for Newfoundland homebrewers (and there are a lot of them) to get critical feedback on their beer, but the more the merrier!

Thanks, I was asking because I have some bottles of Irish stout and an IPA sitting right there in the fridge. I think I will send them if that's OK.

Official rules and regulations including dates and mail-in/drop off locations are out now: https://nlbeerhistory.files.wordpress.c ... ate-11.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Let me know if you have any questions. Open to all! We're hoping a smooth competition, but it is our first shot at it, so we're happy for advice if anything seems less than optimal during the process. One thing is for sure: more notice next time!

my brother is going back offshore Newfoundland monday...I may ask him to drop this off for me.

Maybe I'll ask the drop off point to store it warm until the comp

It seemed like they were storing them in a finished basement so that might be ok for carbing up!

The deadline for entries is Monday. I hummed and harred about sending, but I like the idea of this being a special comp for Newfoundland people to get feedback. Thanks for the generous invitation. I'll be watching with interest, and cheering on the Brewnosers. I think it will be a great event.

Thanks for the interest everyone. We are really looking forward to the tasting and writing up the comments. Again, it's our first shot at this competition, so feedback is always appreciated, especially since we're not BJCP certified. We should be able to at the very least offer some good notes and, of course, the pride of winning!

The window for submissions officially opens today, Wednesday the 10th and officially ends the 15th. Though the judging/tasting will not happen until Sunday December 20th, so if you've got a box in the mail right now, that's the date we absolutely need it.

Looks like my entries didn't get up to scratch for this one. Very poor showing for myself in a way, but I don't feel too bad about it for reasons known only to myself

Did anyone get score sheets back from this.

Just got mine here and there is crazy variability in the scores:

Stout: 36, 36, 21, 10, 15
IPA: 36, 34, 32, 31, 10

I must admit i was quite surprised at the results. I have never seen variance like that in scores before

That is crazy. Is that your IPA that got a gold lately, and silver in the BOS round? and someone gave it 10 points? Was that the same person who gave the stout 10 points? That might be as high as he goes, and you actually got 10/10 !!!

I think, or at least Chris (Chalmers) said, in BJCP sanctioned competitions, the scores have to be within a range of each other, and that's why you often see scores crossed out and changed on score sheets, if there is a wide variance, judges will discuss and adjust their scores to bring them closer together.

I can't comment on this specific comp, as I know less about than the entrants, but that is a large variance.

From http://www.bjcp.org/judgeprocman.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;:
Once all of the judges at the table have finished filling out their scoresheets, they should discuss the entry and their scoring. Keep in mind that some people are more sensitive to certain flavor and aroma compounds (such as diacetyl or DMS) than others. Scores should be within seven points, and preferably within five or fewer points. Adjust scoring as necessary, and write the final assigned score on the cover sheet and flight sheet. Final assigned scores are not necessarily an average of the individual scores.

I can only remember 4 scores. 12, 25, 30, and 32.

I tend to agree with the 12...not sure it was worthy of the higher scores...the beer was nasty
