Re: [Competition Open] Cowtown Yeast Wranglers 2015
450 entries is an insane amount.. good luck to everyone that entered a win would be huge!
I'm not overly confident in this go round as my IPA is at the end of its life cycle (120 days old) and the bitter was early but its worth a shot for some feedback. I just re brewed the IPA so it should be perfect for Ales.

Yes, good luck to you and Justin. Did anyone else enter? IPA is a tough class.

Re: [Competition Open] Cowtown Yeast Wranglers 2015
Yes i never expect too much out of it because the category is so stacked. The same recipe has scored well in four competitions ranging from 35 to 40 with an average of 38 from all the score sheets. I really enjoy it as is and i'm not sure how i could improve it more to do any better so when i brewed it again last week i basically stuck to the same exact recipe but pumped my OG up to 1.070. I'm thinking i may see how it scores in the double IPA category.

Re: [Competition Open] Cowtown Yeast Wranglers 2015
Those are consistently good IPA scores Mark. I had a thought, and I don't know if it is right ...IPA is a big class, but lots of those might be beginner brews as a lot of people start out making IPA. That's not saying beginners don't make winning beers, because they very often do. I wonder which classes are the easiest to compete in. Geof Traill (#3 last year) said American lagers do very well at competitions. I see you have one of those. I think they are difficult to make.

Re: [Competition Open] Cowtown Yeast Wranglers 2015
I think the popularity of the beer dictates the difficulty of the competition. If you look at entry numbers for the AHA comp it seems to line up with the styles popularity.. which would explain the glut in american lagers

Re: [Competition Open] Cowtown Yeast Wranglers 2015
Well done again Mark!
I must saw now i want to try a glass of this raspberry blonde. It as a tough competition with 450 entries, i always know that my ordinary bitter has a hard time stacking up against ESB's, i have often debated tweaking the recipe to push it into that category.

Re: [Competition Open] Cowtown Yeast Wranglers 2015
I just noticed they posted the scores, i was really happy to see my pale ale scored well even though it didn't place.
My stout needs some work, i think i'm going to move to an oatmeal stout for this category, as far as a dry stout goes i really enjoy this recipe but it doesn't score very well.
0164 Fireside Pale Ale 10A: American Pale Ale
37.5
0166 The Bitter End 08A: Standard/Ordinary Bitter
35 3rd: English Pale Ale
0169 Sunday Stout 13A: Dry Stout
29
0170 Wright Man’s Ale 12B: Robust Porter
35.5

Thanks Rob.
My stout is six months old now and they didn't like my ordinary bitter. I love my bitter, it has no crystal. I'm not giving up on it yet.

41 on More is truly impressive! I wonder what the 1st place beer scored, 41 is usually enough to take gold.
Definitely some solid scoring beers there, did you send the same group to Lethbridge?
