Re: Black Box Challenge
Once again is was a great day to sit and chat with everyone about brewing as well as see some amazing presentations! This competition is truly a unique competition and i'm honored to get first place. I'm looking forward to trying all the beers that get made from this comp as each one sounded very interesting and tasty
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: Black Box Challenge
We scored 27, 28, 29, & 29...Our worse scores ever lol. It was too hot. We used the Belgian yeast and the sob took off like mad in 4 hours even at 16c. And the heavy use of chocolate wheat caused it to be astringent. We even tried to mellow the heavy use by not adding to the mash until recirc (last 30min of a 90min mash).
Good news is the hops were perceived like we intended.
Next year I think we may stick closer to our comfort zone....especially yeast

I was around 28 as well. That yeast kicked off some weird notes that didn't work with the orange peel and hops in mine.

Re: Black Box Challenge
Yea I think some smoke/spice notes were present in mine...probably due to yeast

Re: Black Box Challenge
I did a black IPA with orange peel.
Did 2oz of each variety for three additions
Bravo, Mosaic, Sorachi ( think it was mosaic)
I went low on the orange peel but nobody really picked up on an "upfront orange flavor" since it wasn't supposed to be but oh well.
I got a 34 from all judges except for Emily who gave it a 35. I'll take it for a beer designed and brewed in 6 hrs total and brewed only once.
All my comps were Mid to high 30's for me so far but waiting to actually place in one some day. The feedback I got I thought was spot on and all improvements that I would make given another attempt.
All judges picked up a tobacco note in it!!! Hahaha

Shoot. Jumped the gun and registered before I read the whole registration form.
I’m gonna be away during the pick up time.
Anyone able to pick up my box? I live in St. Margaret’s Bay and work in Dartmouth. But could pretty much pick up from anywhere if someone’s willing to help me out.
