Wales & Isle of Man

Post by gm- » Mon Jul 22, 2013 7:12 am

Flying over to the UK tomorrow night, will spend most of my time in Bangor in Wales, 2 days on the Isle of Man, and finally 1 day in Manchester.

Any recommendations on brews to be on the lookout for?

Cheers!
Jon

I don't know that part of the UK very well. I think most pubs would have real ale. Maybe look what is being pulled from the beer engines in the pubs and try them all. The Welsh like their singing. Try the Guinness in the Isle of Man, in parts of Scotland it is similar to the Guinness in Ireland, and very delicious (not like the Guinness they send over here at all).

Have a great trip!

Hey,

I have never been to Bangor but when I am in Wales the beers I usually look out for are Brecon brewing (Brecon, Powys) and Felinfoel (Carmarthenshire) but I dont know if you can find them. I think you may be a bit too far north for most of these beers. Rev. James by Brains (Cardiff) is actually pretty good too and should be nationwide.

On the Isle of Man Okells (Douglas, Isle of Man) used to be pretty good but I have only ever drank it in Scotland. The only brewery I can think of in Manchester is Marble but I have not drank it for 2 years. I hope you have a great trip.

Iirc, guinness is brewed under contract by Moosehead here.

Interesting! No wonder I can't drink it here.

Thanks, this helps, I'll try to look for some of those.

Okells had some pretty decent beers, most of them pretty light ~4%, but full of flavour coming straight from the casks. Brought back their old school IPA and their celtic peat smoked porter. Also had a Felinfoel bitter that was decent,

I`m glad you found some good beer. I always found it funny that they have a beer purity law on the Isle of Man. I also always liked Felinfoel`s stout but I think that`s personal preference.

Hope you were not too jet lagged.
