We're driving to NYC in the spring. Any recommendations for pubs and breweries both in the city and on the way?

I suggest a pint of PBR at the actual Coyote Ugly bar for an interesting (and stinky) adventure. Other than that, you could probably swing by the Pony Bar in Hell's Kitchen.

I've been to:
Rattle and Hum
Gingerman
Blind Tiger
BierKraft
eataly birreria
all are great. I hear Torst is awesome as well. Start following @brew_york on twitter and they will have plenty of ideas for you. Whole foods is a great spot for bottles, we hit up a couple more but I don't remember the names.

It's hot as fuck in July and Aug. Take nad cream (no I'm not kidding) The humidity and walking will do you in. If they are selling water in the street, get it. Not knowing the locations of the little shops is a killer.
I do love NY but in small bits.

Gold bond medicated powder also works.

Gold Bond often causes a nasty rash after a few days so you use more and more to try to get the rash better. Clever design. Heavily marketed. Hate that stuff. IMO should be taken off the shelves.

I'll be there again in September and found
Taproom 307, which will be one block away from my hotel. Their beer menu is quite impressive.

Alright here are some of the spots Brenna & I went to in NYC:
Food:
-Parm (near Little Italy in Manhattan) - awesome sandwiches
-Street food tour of Queens - highly recommended, the guys name was Jeff Orlick and took us to try Napalese, Tibetan, Halal, Arepas, Ecuadorian, quesadillas, Peruvian, and some Thai.
-Halal guys food trucks were the best street Halal we tried.
-Shake Shake - great burger joint near the Museum of Natural History, also has a few other locations.
-Broadway Bites at Howard Square was a neat pop up festival with some great food.
-L'Ecole was a nice french cooking school restaurant.
-Blue Bottle coffee wasn't food, but good coffee.
-Smorgasburg market in Brooklyn was near the Brooklyn brewery and happens on the weekends - lots of amazing food.
-Criffdogs is a great hotdog joint.
-Momofuku - awesome restaurant with roman noodles mostly - I like the one in Toronto better though.
-Corner Bistro had some awesome burgers.
-Magnolia Bakery has the best cupcakes and banana pudding.
-Bagels on the Square had some awesome NYC bagels.
-Lombardis Pizza is a pretty classic pizza spot.
-Takashi is a fantastic Japanese grill/raw food spot.
-Propserity Dumpling is a hole in the wall China Town place, but best dumplings ever.
-Taipan Bakery is another great spot in China town.
Beer:
Samples (Brooklyn) - great tap selection and a large shelf of great bottles you can buy to go or drink there
-Rattle & Hum had a good selection - near the Empire state building I believe.
-Trader Joe's had a decent selection of beer and was pretty cheap.
-Whole Foods also had decent bottle selection.
-Beer Boutique was a good bottle shop in Manhattan.
-Brooklyn Brewery was a fun, drunken shit show.
-Northwest Territory was a brooklyn bar with decent beer selection.
-Dirk the Norseman was a pretty awesome Brooklyn brewpub.
-Spritzenhaus was a good Williamsburg bar, lots of selection and good place to people watch.
-Torst is a fantastic beer bar in Williamsburg - tip: get 5oz pours as they almost always over pour (at least that day they did)!
-DBA was another decent bar in Brooklyn.
-Blind Tiger has great selection but is REAL small - go early.
Both:
-Chelsea Market - the Fill Station had some great beer in mason jars, also some interesting places to eat/neat stuff to buy.
-Eataly is another great market full of good food and a nice selection of beer, lots of Italian craft beer.
