Hayz dayz noble grape

Post by homebrewcrew » Tue Jan 10, 2012 10:37 pm

Made their box recipe half grain half extract im new to brewing kinda has a weird taste. It took 12 Hallertau hops not sure if this is where the weird taste came from. Would like to do a wheat beer again but do not want this clovey taste. Any help welcome.

What style of beer do you normally drink?

I'm not a pro by any means, but I was reading up on this recently and I read that the yeast determines whether there's clovey or fruity flavours in the beer... so, you could try a different yeast with the kit to get the flavour you want.

What yeast was in there? I'm assuming it was a German wheat yeast. Clove/banana is usually the deal with those yeasts.

:stupid: 2nd what x said. Also what temperature did you ferment it at? Even a cleaner profile yeast at a warm temp can give clove/fruit notes.

It was a german wheat yeast. I think it is just what I am use to drinking, never really ventured far when I went to the NSLC always grabbed keiths. Really want to try a lot of different beer just think the body is not use to the different flavors from the hops etc. The more I seem to drink of this beer the better it seems.

NSLC selection varies by store. When you are near a store, not your regular, go in and look.

There are Primer, Bishops cellar and one other I know of that sell singles of different stuff.

A growler from each of the locals is a good way to have a few of each offering.

Lots of people also travel or know others that do and pick up beer from away.

If the "Hayz Days" is a hefeweizen, then you, my friend, have stumbled into a favourite beer style of mine. The style of yeast is supposed to throw off lots of banana and clove (the temperature at which you ferment will change the ratio of the two). It will also be cloudy, as that is some suspended yeast in the beer (and the 50+% wheat doesn't hurt that). The bittering in this style is very minimal. I'm not sure if you literally meant that there were 12 hops (cones or pellets) in the recipe, but that sounds about right. :)

Propeller makes one, so at least you've got a local commercial example of it, but the best in the world are from Germany, where they'd have a few hundred years to get the style down.

And this is EXACTLY why the Brewnosers exist! We were/are frustrated with the NSLC's shitty beer selection, so we get together monthly to share homebrew and beers we've brought home from away. At a typical meeting, we'll drink 20+ different beer, the overwhelming majority of which cannot be bought in the province. Come on out! Keep an eye on the Events forum for the details, but the meetings are always the second Tuesday of the month.

Thanks for the help since this post the beer has began to grow on me now, I barely notice the strong taste of cloves. Was worried for a bit that hoppier beers were just not for me. Glad this is not the case.

That's not a hoppy beer though, it's at the far other end of the spectrum for hops.
