Propeller-ish Bitter

Post by sutepan » Fri Nov 08, 2013 11:32 am

I've come up with an extract recipe to try and get in the same ballpark as Propeller Bitter. I'll be making the starter today and brewing tomorrow.

Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.

This may be my last extract recipe, as I'm looking into experimenting with BIAB all-grain.

Thanks in advance!

I did a propeller clone extract recipe a few months back. They use warrior and Willamette as their hops. I used Columbus as the bittering hop (little cleaner then nuggent) and added Willamette at 10 min and at flameout. Your late nuggent additions will mask any Willamette aroma. I think your grain bill and extract will give you the sweetness you are looking for.

I've tried to clone this beer countless times. I find a little bit of amber malt gets you closer to the real thing. I don't have any experience with melanoidan, maybe it will do the same.

I'm thinking the melanoiden will do the same as the amber and give more of the colour in Propeller. Maybe I'll move the nugget to earlier in the boil and just let the Willamette come through after flameout.

Let us know how this one turns out. This is one of the few beers I buy at the NSLC anymore.

What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

Boil day was yesterday morning....first brew-day with a toque and gloves this year! On the up-side, the tap-water is colder so had the wort down to pitching temp in 15 minutes! I took the Nugget aroma-steep addition out (thanks kenny10!). Ended up with a SG of 1.058 as my volume was slightly low and decided not to top it up. Pitched the Ringwood starter, and had visible action after 5 hours. It's maintaining 21C. The wort tasted great!

Good to hear.

I had a bit of ice in my hose this morning - but once the water started flowing, wort cooled really quickly.

It's in the keg. Had a taste, initially doesn't seem that close to Propeller. Body is spot on, bitterness is good, but it seems to have almost a whisky-ish note on the nose. We'll see what some ageing will do for it.
