Re: Advent #4 - German Ale
Just tried this beer and I'm with Jeff. It reminded me of a Sleeman Cream Ale. My preference would be an American style cream ale with more ibu's, but this is a well made and carbonated beer. I feel if any of us had this on tap it would please both macro and micro drinkers. Good job and thanks for the beer. It was tasty.

That's a nice, drinkable, easy drinking beer. I think it might be technically good as well, but I'm no expert.
I could have a few glasses of that with a baguette and cheese for a summer's day lunch.

Yeah definitely a cream ale.
Jeff, you did a fantastic job on this beer. Very clean. The ingredients all seem to come through well.
My glass is empty now. Time for #3... I skipped yesterday and didn't want to ruin my pallete for this with a DIPA.

Re: Advent #4 - German Ale
I think it came down to lighting. My beer is much lighter than the picture above.jeffsmith wrote:It does—Jeff's recipe lists the colour at 6.9 EBC (= 3.5 SRM). Looks a bit darker than that, but that could just be due to kettle caramelization, or possibly lighting of the photo.Keith wrote:Beer looks awfully dark (could be lighting) for a cream ale. Doesn't a cream ale top out at 5SRM?

It's surprisingly very quaffable. I could easily got for another bottle.

Re: Advent #4 - German Ale
I just came back from getting crushed at ball hockey (i'm the goalie) and this is a perfect beer for "after the game". I only wish it is came in a can so I could crush it on my head when finished
Well done.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: Advent #4 - German Ale
Enjoying this now, had missed the last two nights as I was on the road.
Appearance:
Golden colour, near-crystal clear. Nice head retention.
Aroma:
Light aroma of malt, maybe if I strain I can get a bit of hops.
Flavour
Definitely some hops in here, spicy noble hop character. Light malt character as well, but hopping is dominating. Bit of sharp lingering bitterness as well.
Mouthfeel
Medium mouthfeel, low-med carbonation level. Crisp.
Overall
A very nice, easy-drinking ale. Cream Ale seems like a good descriptor, decent bitterness that the light body allows to shine through.
Thanks for sharing with us!

Flavourful and easy drinker, as others have said. This would rule on a hot summer day. It still is great on a cold, near winter day.

Re: Advent #4 - German Ale
Thanks everyone so far, this is the first time sharing beer with people other than family and friends. It is nice to get this kind of feedback. This is one of my favourites especially on a hot summers day.

This is exactly what happened last night. I had mine right after to check it, and it tasted off. So much that at lunch today I had two, one from the keg and one that was bottled and primed after the keg was full. They were both the same and very drinkable so it eased my worries.jtmwhyte wrote:I don't know if I should drink this tonight... My palate is still wrecked from the Hop Assault

Re: Advent #4 - German Ale
just finishing mine now after a long day and it's a great fit. Unlike last night I'll be able to go back to work for a couple of hours packing orders (last night I fell asleep on the couch after my drunk posting!).
Nice subtle hops, clean and crisp. This would be a great hot day on the deck beer. And please don't insult it by comparing it to Sleemans cream ale, this is much better and much more sharp.

I can set a couple aside. Just a matter of getting them to you. Sadly I am not that way anytime soon that I am aware of yet.bluenose wrote:mine was flat...![]()

Yeah, mine wasn't nearly as carbonated as what some others had, little-to-no head. I don't have much/any experience with bottling, perhaps it was due to the twist-off bottle? Maybe the cap didn't have a perfect seal. Still tasted good though!bluenose wrote:mine was flat...![]()

yeah that's what I thought too... which worries me, because I used twist-off bottles for mine too (#7), so mine might end up being flat too.mikeorr wrote:Yeah, mine wasn't nearly as carbonated as what some others had, little-to-no head. yea I hate twist off's. Never had success with them the few times I used them. Always crown or grolsch.

I went with the softer caps which are supposed to crunch into the threads better, so we shall see
try a few sprinkles of salt if #7 is flat

Re: Advent #4 - German Ale
My version was completely flat and quite oxidized (cardboardy).
For the record. I've used twist off's for many batches of beer and never had a problem. They are a bit harder to cap, but still hold a seal just as well.
